One of my duties at the medical billing company I work for is to field phone calls from patients.
Me: <Name of company>, this is <name of me>, how can I help you?
Caller: 062589623
Me: !!
What the hell is that number? Is that your account number? Your SSN number (har, har Rappa)? Furthermore, I don't know what your issue is, so I don't know what application I need to pull up to resolve your issue. All you've done with that crap is added another 30+ seconds to this call because you didn't want to follow the process. I didn't ask you for whatever the hell number you just gave me. I need to know what the issue is. Thirty seconds doesn't sound like a lot, but it adds up over the course of the day for each jackass that does this.
In line with this, when I waited tables, it was standard practice to greet your customers with something to the effect of "How are you?" When you reply "I need some cheese fries and a coke," I want to punch you in the face. Would it kill you to be courteous? Am I so far beneath you that you can't even bother to actually listen to the questions I'm asking? Believe me, I don't want to spend my day chatting you up; the longer you sit here, generally the less money I make.
Take the 2 seconds to actually listen to what I'm saying before blurting out some bullshit that has nothing to do with the price of tea in China. Listen instead of just waiting for your turn to talk.
