I have money... and I give it and my time... I wasn't referring to myself. I'm saying people that say they can't give money because they don't have it, SHOULD give time. Geez...

It was a point for Sabias' sake. Geez...

I agree with you, by the way.

/giant facepalm.

Why? Everything he says is strong. The SS idea both intrigues and scares me. While the responsible would invest that money for retirement, a lot would choose to spend it on "things" in a similiar fashion to my previous health care statement.

Ah but that is the double edged sword of being free... you are free to fuck yourself.

Alanon am i making you lean Dejavu now? move to Az and vote for me !!!

Sayz yoo. Now I'm finished working my butt off for the day. Time to go home!

Where did I say that you should give everything that you have to someone else? In Canada you pay taxes which are a percentage of your income - these taxes go towards various things including health care. With our system if you break your arm, get cancer, have a premie baby etc. you walk (or phone) for help and you receive it. At the end of your treatment you walk away, say thanks to your doctor and go about your life, no bills, no bankruptcy, no denial of life saving treatment because your insurance doesn't cover it. Lose your job? No problemo, you and your kids still deserve to live healthy happy lives. This is a system I believe in, it's a system that still encourages you to do well for yourself and achieve your goals but also helps your fellow country-men/women.

With the taxes I pay I do give every single paycheque to help others who are less fortunate than me, as far as my charity time I chose do devote it to retired racing dogs rather than a soup kitchen. When asked to help someone (putting together Christmas dinners for local families who don't have money) I have and will continue to do so. I couldn't stomach a system that allowed you to buy 4 Mercedes benz while someone dies from an infection because they didn't have insurance.

I think you and I have always been close to the same lines politically. I have myself given consideration to a run at a congressional seat, just to unseat the double talking harpie of a congresswoman we have who talks in Toledo about banning ALL guns, then 2 days later goes out to the rifle matches at camp perry and talks about defending the right to bear arms. I respect all opinions, but that kind of double talk drives me up a fucking wall!!

Obviously, we disagree on certain fundamental philosophies that won’t be resolved in this thread. Arguments about the proper function of government are nothing new. But, the diversity of opinion has been fun to read.

I’m with Sabia as far as having no problem with a government taking care of its people. I believe that it is essential to maintain a healthy society. If I get an increase in pay, I expect to be in a higher tax bracket. That’s ok; my taxes pay for needed services and infrastructure. I don’t have kids but I don’t balk at paying property taxes every year to support, in part, my neighborhood schools.

I can’t think of an organization of people that didn’t have some structure in place to address issues of the whole. If resources were scarce, the whole damn tribe migrated in search of food and trade, not just the hungriest.

The “Pull yourself up by yer bootstraps!” rhetoric is old. Most people, if given the chance, want to provide for themselves. Very few people become financially successful without some form of assistance. Great grandpa came out west and was given acres of land by the government so long as he improved it. His son received a home with no money down and a very low interest rate thanks to veteran home loan programs. No way could I have afforded the education I received without low-interest federal loans and grants.

I don’t think government should babysit but one of its primary functions is to maintain stability, both economic and social.

I agree with Sabs 100%. I may be a bit biased, but she hit the nail on the head when it comes to what I think health care should be like.

From Sunday's Televised "Meet the Press" Senator Obama was asked about his stance on the American Flag. Obama Explains National Anthem Stance Sun, 07 Sept. 2008 11:48:04 EST, General Bill Ginn' USAF (ret.) asked Obama to explain why he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played. The General also stated to the Senator that according to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171...During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. At the very least, "Stand and Face It."

Senator Obama Live on Sunday states, "As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides, Obama said. 'There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing.' If that were our anthem, then I might salute it. We should consider to reinvent our National Anthem as well as to redesign our Flag to better offer our enemies hope and love. It's my intention, if elected, to disarm America to the level of acceptance to our Middle East Brethren. If we as a Nation of warring people, should conduct ourselves as the nations of Islam, whereas peace prevails. Perhaps a state or period of mutual concord between our governments. When I become President, I will seek a pact or agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity, and a freedom from disquieting oppressive thoughts. We as a Nation have placed upon the nations of Islam an unfair injustice. My wife disrespects the Flag for many personal reasons. Together she and I have attended several flag burning ceremonies in the past, many years ago. She has her views and I have mine. Of course now, I have found myself about to become the President of the United States and I have put aside my hatred. I will use my power to bring change to this Nation, and offer the people a new path of hope. My wife and I look forward to becoming our Country's First Family."

Can anyone verify this? If he actually said that... wow.

Woman doles out candy after Obama backers denied treats

Janette Fleury ended up passing out a life lesson with her candy this Halloween: Sometimes adults act like children. Across the street, a fellow supporter of Republican presidential candidate John McCain was denying costumed children candy if their parents supported Democratic rival Barack Obama.

“They came to my house and saw the McCain sign and asked, ‘Are you going to be like that, too?’ ” Fleury said today. “I told them, ‘No. Sometimes adults just act stupid.’ ” It was perhaps an unexpected message coming from a 51-year-old woman wearing a witch’s hat. But Fleury felt it was necessary after neighbor Shirley Nagel turned Friday night’s annual candy quest into a political debate with youngsters.

On Friday, Nagel had a sign in her Grosse Pointe Farms yard reading: “No handouts for Obama supporters, liars, tricksters or kids of supporters,” according to WJBK-TV (Fox2). When children approached, Nagel quizzed them about their parents’ political leanings, Fleury said. If they were pro-Obama, Nagel turned them away, she said.

The fire was stoked further when Nagel’s next-door neighbor put out a large Obama poster and his own homemade sign promising candy for all. Nagel told WJBK-TV that “Obama’s scary.” When asked about children who’d been turned away empty-handed and crying, she said: “Oh, well. Everybody has a choice.”

Fleury said most of the rejected children didn’t appear upset. Rather, many walked away chanting Obama’s name, she said.

Nagel couldn’t be reached for comment today. The Associated Press reported that her front-yard sign was taken down by Saturday afternoon. Phone calls placed by the Free Press were forwarded to a voice mail in-box that was full.

Fleury takes her politics seriously, too, but she said that there’s a time and a place for them.

“I just don’t think politics should be intertwined with Halloween,” she said.

That woman is obviously in the wrong. Like the other lady said, there's a time and a place for politics. Punishing children for their parents political views, something they have no control over, is asinine.

A plane crashes onto a deserted island carrying McCain and Obama... who is going to survive?

America

OMG, I can't believe his grandmother died 1 day from seeing him make history, this is just so sad. I guess she just has better seats now, rest in peace.
