The worse RPGs?

Its also the first game to have "angst" be a main quality in a main character.

No, FF4 was. Cecil's entire story was angst ridden, complete with him starting out as a Dark Knight.

This whole argument is fucking stupid and I'm getting tired of reading this thread, but I want to add a comment. This may be outdated by now but fuck reading three more pages of this.

Enemies leveling with you was a wonderful mechanic to an RPG. There is nothing more infuriating than just waltzing through the very last dungeon and boss because i spent a few too many hours exploring or what have you. It made for a degree of difficulty in a genre of game that catered to people wanting to do 9999 damage to something as soon as they saw it. That Red Dragon enemy is a terrible example anyways, since it was a normal mob on 1 island very far out of the way of everything that was mostly meant for maxing out your people and your GF's, iirc. I liked the draw system, but i know why everyone else didn't, and the fact that enemies could do it too was a big mistake. Draw is good system, but they just flopped it pretty horridly, and now no one is willing to chance it for fear in following in FF8's footsteps.

No, Draw was a complete bullshit and trash system, and enemies leveling with you was also supremely shitty, or at least it was so badly implemented in FF8 that the only solid example we have of it shows that it sucks goat sack.

Draw was a nice concept but it failed horribly. Having to draw 11 times per character, minimum, the moment you see a new spell, in order to max out your stats? Fucking gay. Boring as shit. I'd rather just kill enemies to gain levels over them. There wasn't even any creativity in the system - which spell raises the numbers more? OK pick that one. And then you can break the system wide open with incredibly simple "tricks" like sticking drain on your weapon. Brilliant.

And let's not even get into how much it makes you not want to cast spells. Nevermind that most of the spells in the game sucked.

And then they introduced Aura. LAWL.

FF8 is quite possibly the worst, it was saved slightly by having very good graphics and presentation as well as a fairly decent combat system, but the overall game mechanics were a complete trainwreck.

Roughly tied with FF8 would have to be Xenosaga 2. It was so flawed in so many ways it's almost disturbing that it's sandwiched in between the solid Xenosaga and the exceptional Xenosaga 3. It had so many neat concepts that were poorly executed, and just a few minor adjustments could've made it so much more fun to play. Hell I bet I could rebalance the game engine as-is and make it 100% more playable in about two weeks of testing... -_-

imo FF12 and Legend of Dragoon, 12 because of its horrible lack of anything useful for melee.. like nothing useful besides target and swing your sword..

And LoD because it was ugly (graphics were different back then, not in quality.. but what they did with it.) it was the cheesiest most linear most stereotypical garbage plot ever, not to mention everything was a general rip off of its recent counter part ff7-8.

LoD's story is actually more akin to FF9 than 7 and 8. The story is almost the exact same, lol.

Regardless, LoD is in my top 10 fave list

I mean most FF games don't have a love story. FFX definitely didn't. FFIX wasn't even close, Zidane actually hated Princess Garnet. And don't get me started on FFVII, Cloud hated everyone, especially Aeris.

FFX was the biggest love story after VIII. Tidus and Yuna were all over each others balls the entire game. And that aweful scene at Macalania Lake? How can you ignore that shit? FFVIII was the biggest love story, but X and X-2 were a close second.

I always play melee in RPG's, don't like mages, and I thought that game was fucking cake. It is so easy to completely destroy everything in your path with no level grinding required. It's called "berserk". There's alot more detail to it than just that but that's the biggest thing.

I was being sarcastic, and mocking you, because you're a blind fool if you think FFVII has no love story.

FFX-2. possibly the worse excuse for a sequel, hell I didn't even want a sequel. I was fine the way X ended.

Name one instance other than the carnival ride. There might have been a sentence or two of suggestion here and there throughout the game but that's it. The only thing that could be considered a "love" scene in the whole game is the carnival ride, and that was a half-assed love scene at best.

Love isnt all about "oh em gee, lets do it." There are many different situations in VII where love is obviously apparent. I don't just mean barrets affection for the planet, either, lol.

Red, although through the beginning it was embarrassment, is known to love his father, not to mention his own tribe.

Barret himself is driven by the love of his lost wife, and again not to mention his entire village, save a few.

Cloud and Aerith have an obvious romantic story between themselves.

Tifa has a painfully obvious attraction toward cloud.

Both Cloud and Barret are further driven by the deaths of three of their close friends.

I shouldnt even need to mention the story between Vincent and Lubrecia.

No love story in VII?

Just because there's only one -outright- love scene, does NOT mean there is no love plot. In FFX, the only outright love scene is the one in the pond. Yet you claim that game has a "OMG SUPER GAY!" romantic sub-plot.

All the way through there are scenes of Tifa and Cloud's childhood friendship, when she blatantly hints that she loves him, etc. There's even parts where YUFFIE hints at feelings for Cloud.

You're just a fucking fanboy for FFVII, but you don't want to admit you like a game that has a romantic side to it. Just man up and admit it, you're like a fuckin brick wall.

I wanna know why people think romantic themes in games are dumb. What is wrong with a love story?

He is right, there is only one blatant "love scene." What he's completely wrong about, and what everyone else brings up, is that there was a whole lot more love going on throughout the game than just that one scene.

If Cloud didn't love Aeris, then why was he suffering so much when Sephiroth killed her? That went way beyond just being a friend. Tifa's struggle in Cloud's mind was obvious how much she loved him.

There was a lot of love going on in FFVII, it wasn't slap-you-in-the-face blatant, but it's definitely pretty obvious. Maybe he thinks love involves jumping someone every chance you get, and that's why he missed it.

X is littered with "outright" cutscenes of Yuna and Tidus flirting with each other. Plus at the end there's that deal where she finally says "I love you". In VII Tifa and Cloud are more good friends than anything, I only remember 1 instance of any hint at feelings. The scene where Yuffie hints at it is supposed to be funny, not serious. Cloud and Aeris is laughable, because even if there was something between them, she gets stuck in the gut halfway through the game.

The main reason X is a chick-flick and VII isn't is because in X most of the dialogue is flirty shit between Yuna and Tidus. In VII there's maybe a paragraph or two worth of it throughout the whole game.

We're talking about romantic love here, not love in general.

You just read too much into things.

Love stories are stupid, not just in games, in everything. It's severly overused.

There were 3 romantic love examples there

Love stories overused? What else do you expect to be used? Save the planet stories?

Oh wait...

Save the universe stories? Umm... New idea for FF game, get to work on time or get fired story, it will undoubtedly break barriers.

Wait, GTA does that...

I'd rather see a watch paint dry story than another love story.

EDIT: and you know what, it's not even just that they're so overused(which they are), they're just stupid in general. I find no enjoyment in watching two people fall in love or be in love or fall out of love, I really just don't give a shit about anything like that.

Thats fine, to each his own.

The problem is you're badmouthing love stories, when FF7 has plenty of it in it, even if you can't see it.

You obviously just skipped through a lot of the dialogue without bothering to read any of it. Especially if you think that Cloud and Tifa only have friendly feelings towards each other.

You just read too much into things.
No, you just can't see the obvious. Apparently the characters have to outright say "I love you" for you to think there's a love story there.
