Thf/RNG merits

You need about 500 Accuracy to get 95% on the THF type Mamool Ja's in Thickets. Theres a program called FFXIEQ that will tell you your accuracy with all your gear, merits and food etc and my NIN was only around 405, but then again I have very few pieces of gear that I use on NIN to directly increase Accuracy.

I bet someone has parsed the difference between 5 str and 5 dex on thief for merits. It was prolly negligable overall, but since you leveled ranger also go Str all the way because RNG prolly benefits most of any jobs with added str on WS.

And I have to agree with Sharkbite in a SA situation Dex will prolly be better. In a TA situation itll prolly be nearly no difference except on specific mobs. Thief gets tossed around so much though that situation doesnt happen enough for it to be worth it. And since most times when you use Shark Bite is gonna be for SC on HNMs youll prolly end up only using TA anyways... So its a dead end situation.

Lion. I've been wondering this. If you have the 5/5 Dex for the 2.5 acc Why not just drop the Tatami shield and use a tariqua+1 for 5 acc and go 5/5 str?

Ideally I should have used a viking instead of tatami, but since tatami looks 1000 times sexier I am always too lazy to trade for one. :P But yeah in an extreme situation I'd opt for tarique +1.

Deci that was a fun program, how do you test your equipment on mobs using that program tho? But then Thief mob is not a real concern as you only need to deal with 1 Thief and feint will be ready for him. Ninja might post more of a problem.

THF/WAR is an MP sink(in thickets). I prefer going /nin and not holding back than /war.

The amount of accuracy you need for certain mobs is posted in Japanese somewhere, or buried in Japanese forums. Someone told me a few of the accuracy numbers needed in the most common Merit PT XP areas.

I think Decorative Weapons was around 380, the Mamool Ja mage types are around 400-420... I can't remember them all but you could test it with a parser and using /check. You just need a wide array of +/- Accuracy gear to equip so you can get a 100-200 range in accuracy.

I really can't comment to much on this because my thief is gear for very specific things.

If you solo or Exp on your thief a lot, you might wanna merit the following:
Str: 5
Triple Attack +5
Sneak Attack +5
Assassin's Charge: 3
Feint: 1
Aura Steal: 1
Ambush: 1

Reason being:
Triple Attack is self explainitory,
Sneak usually will be more useful in EXP, and coupled with the touch of Ambush would be better paired wiht Multi-Hit Weaponskills while Sneaked.
Having Assassin's Charge dropped to 10 min to match Feint is nice, 'cause you can pair em up for attacks.
Aura Steal is really helpful once and a while, particularly in dynamis.

If you do a lot of HNM on your thief...
Str: 5
Triple Attack: 5
Trick Attack: 5
Assassin's Charge: 3
Feint: 1
Ambush: 2

Again, just catching the stray comment, Viking Shield is Nice during EXP, but as a thief, if you are on HNM, you should go for the Tatami. The Str/Vit challenge is more important to thief than the Attack/Defense challenge.

I have no clue what merits to merit for Ranger.

RNG is alot simpler to merit (just to complete Phraust's post)

STR: 5
Archery or Marksmanship(Whichever you use) :8
Critical hits: 4
Rapid Shot: 5
Snapshot: 3

If your using RNG on HNM alot, Merit Flashy Shot. But seeing as thats generaly unlikely, you can just merit 3 into Recycle. Saving 15% of your expencive ammo is nice, and Flashy Shot on an EXP mob is generaly wasted.

I had lv.3 AC, but i de-lvled it because it's really not that good all-in-all; I capped feint afterwards instead. If you're exping, soloing, or doing HNM on your THF, level 3 feint all the way. You underestimate the power of Feint, it's like... capping your acc on byakko for 30ish seconds while using meat. It's incredibly useful (especially at thickets camp), as well; I was able to use feint each time we pulled a lurker.

Completely agree with Necro for /war. Only place I find it safe to use is trolls.

I hate losing the ability to deal with hate myself and making others taking extra hate, especially we are one of the best jobs taking hate in merit party. I just think that when you are in a cannon, you should really blink your share of attacks otherwise you are gimping everyone elses' xp.

As for cat2 merits, I personally maxed feint since it's incredibly useful on a lot of stuff. (Prolly the best Cat2 merits amoung all jobs?) Also I went 2 merits on aura steal... coz stealing random buffs just make my soloing adventure much more enjoyable/ ^^

Absorbing MG's shock spikes is fun.

yea, all in all, tier 2 thf merit arent awsome, exeption is feint, which is totally awsome on hnm ( tried on jailers myself). AC not worth the trouble imo, i made many tests it doest stack with SA+WS or TA+WS or SATA+WS. AUra steal can be fun to steal stuffs, but hell, i ended up to steal lolprotect or lolspikes in dynamis, really not that great :p i choose ambush and feint maxed.

Also, you know whats funny in this thread? the same people that claim DEX is less good than STR for thf are the same that claimed in another thread that assassin charge stacks with sataWS. On another note, I use to get exp buffer for dynamis with a friend that has the 3 sky abjuration, we deal the same dmg ( me using DH+AF2hat+AF2 gloves+AF2feet).

Also about abjurations, i dont do sky and hnm because its a waste of my time: why would i go there and expect 3 equip that are good for WS only, when a tons of jobs get a tons of gear out of sky. look what blm and thf get in sky, look what nin rng etc get there.

The THF in my party yesterday tried it too.

He said "Well, supposedly it stacks.. .but I never do more damage with it =/"

Not only yourself is taking dmg when you get hate, also you are forcing someone else to take hate for an extended period of time. Others can go Ni > Ni and never have to cast ichi if not because of the extra hate from TADE.

I just prefer /nin coz it gives me the option of blinking a few hits for my party, WS whenever I want. Or even SAWS and tank for the first half of the fight myself.

You should try THF/WAR. Its good. With TA and SA you can make 2 different people tank.

As for the "forcing smeone else to take hate", I assuem you mean with TA. Problem is, things usually don't stay alive long enough for it to matter.

And I dunno about you, but MP sink is far from it. When I play around on WHM, I can do just fine without anyone to refresh me. So with 5 other melees and me, I can haste everyone, and keep them alive even if the MNK doesn't have NIN sub, and still not slow the party down due to me running out of MP. So I don't know what would make THF/WAR more of a MP sink then other jobs with WAR sub.

ROFL. Yeah....
I stopped this debate, because:
A) There is no debate.
B) The opposing viewpoint has repeatedly shown themselves to be less than credible.
