Why Summoners = Main healers.

Ok, here's my logic as to why Summoner isn't as effective as a main healer as a White Mage.

Before level 42 you don't have Regen, or Cure III.

It's as simple as that. With a Summoner as a main healer at level 41, you effectively have a level 20 White Mage with lots of MP. Having the MP to spam Cure II endlessly doesn't make you better than a level 42 White Mage, which would have Regen, Haste, Cure III, and Cure IV in case of emergancies.

I think my summoner has 572 MPs at 30. It has autofresh. I don't have regen which is less hate, but then I do have the ability to cast many many more cure 2s and in a cureoff outlast any WHM. I won't get hate doing it unless my tank is gimp. In the case of having extra MP(very very often) I can do bloodpacts which while certainly don't merit me a damage dealer, beat the shit out of Banish. In emergencys my WHM would use benediction, then die. In emergencies, my SMN would use astral flow and fenrir would rape every monster for 470ish damage. I'm sorry forgive me if I'm not crying at night that my SMN is not a WHM.

Summoners, with the attainment of Fenrir, which can only take a day if you're high enough on a job, is a surprisingly cheap job to play. Astral Rings, vermillion cloak if you're truly dedicated. Nothing all to terribly expensive compared with some of the other jobs if intending to be the very best possible.

While I agree that SMN does have it cheaper than some jobs, it isn't one that can be done properly 'on the cheap.' Even at my level, you've got:

8x elemental staves (160k for Dark and 120k for Light, ~100k for the other 6)
Austere Hat (20k)
Austere Robe (375-400k)
Austere Cuffs (350k) or Carbuncle Mitts (Free, but a L75 NM fight and a risky trek to get the Offering)
Holy Phial (50k)
Enhancing/Healer's Earring (50k for both)
2x Electrum Rings (20k for the pair)
Aurora Mantle (10k? Unsure on this one)
Hojutsu Belt (50k)
Evoker's Spats (AF)
Austere Sabots (275k? Again, unsure)

So even without HQ elemental staves or the Verm. Cloak I need at 59, that's still over 2 million in gear pre-60. Sure, it's no MNK/SAM level 40 'ouch' but it's still sizable dent in the wallet. And what does it cost to hire a team of 5 to get the whispers + Fenrir for a little-wittle Taru like myself nowadays? Seriously. I want the blue puppy.

Anyway.

As for being a healer? Sure, we'd prefer a party where all we need to do is bring out our best avatar, sit back and watch them beat the crap out of any mob we're facing. But looking at it from that perspective, it doesn't really make sense. Consider what would happen if avatars had the same damage/MP ratio as, say... a BLM. Those melee hits did 70-80 instead of 20. Blood Pacts are hitting for 500+ every minute at level 50. You're doing a DD's job. All great, right? Except, of course, that now BLM's (and possibly DRK's) are out of a job because you're doing all that damage with ABSOLUTELY NO RISK. All that hate gets planted on your avatar, and with a quick Release everyone's in the clear. While yes, I do wish I could do some amazing, classic FF avatar ass-kicking, I know it's not going to happen because it would throw all the other classes out of balance.

So, we heal. Are we as good as a WHM? Well... yes and no. In a NIN party, we can drop Hastega or Earthen Ward, then either let the avatar melee or just Release and sit to get back some MP. In the party Sanjo mentioned earlier, the only times I had to really cure was when the Monk would finish a SC with Raging Fists and rip hate away. Not really a big deal.

In PLD parties, though... I find WHM's to be better in the role. Sometimes, with the extra damage being dealt onto the tank, bad things happen (Double Attack Crits + TP move in rapid succession can be more than a single Cure III can handle) plus the tendency of current PLD's to think they're DD as well. Nothing against you guys, but get a Dark Staff, please, your XP chains will thank you.

I really don't cure because I want to. If I wanted to cure, I would have kept my WHM as a main job. But to get to the cool stuff that SMN's get to do in the later levels, well, I'll heal. It's a means to an end.

Sorry but a SMN will never out dmg me! Even Ariea who is 75 can't do it and she is 15 lvls above me you could put DRK's out of a job swoo but you'll never take a BLM's job away swoo. Sorry Swoo but your wishful thinking just isn't going to happen!

How you got 'swoo' out of my name takes a new breed of retard. I've been called Cubs or CubsWoo or even Woo.. but swoo? Damn, those Whip-its must work faster on a Saturday night.

And if you had a shred of reading comprehension, I said that it WOULD. NOT. MAKE. SENSE for a SMN to have the same dmg/mp ratio as a BLM, simply because the SMN damage comes at no risk to the actual player. The only way we even come close is with Astral Flow. And in case that's not plain enough English for you, I'll do another example...

Distortion SC, Freeze MB for 1000 damage. Mob is not dead (let's assume this is a retarded BLM who likes to open the fight with Freeze.) Mob now takes off after the BLM and beats him down for all/nearly all of his HP unless there's a PLD with Cover at the ready and a good position.

Now, assuming SMN avatars have that power...

Distortion SC, Shiva uses a Blood Pact and MB's for 1000. Mob tears into Shiva for a few rounds, and poof! She disappears into whatever avatar purgatory they go to when we make them disappear. Her hate is now GONE, and the mob goes back to the tank. SMN smiles happily and re-casts Shiva to repeat the process.

This is a wonderful thing if you're pro-SMN, but all in all it makes no sense. Do I wish base avatar melee power was increased? Sure. Do I wish I could MB for more than I do now? Of course. Do I expect it to happen without massive unbalancing issues regarding the other jobs? Of course not.

All told, I think that the melee damage should be bumped up, if for no other reason than for us to have something more useful to do when our NIN tanks are optimal and we just sit around twiddling our thumbs.

Very nice point, CubsWoo, I'm surprised I didn't look at it from the hate management side of things.

Of course, if SE wanted to balance that, they could have all hate generated by an avatar go to the SMN when the avatar is released. And maybe have the hate from the avatar go back to the avatar when it's re-summoned. But that would destroy the SMN's uniqueness of being able to not worry about hate at all when using avatar abilities.

Yes but how often does the avatar steal hate from the tank? Not very often until you're talking end game. And at that point BLM is fill to the brim with -enmity and the avatar is not.
The point being, even if SMN >COULD< steal hate they don't do enough damage too. Unless of course you combined their blood pacts with their healing hate.

Hence, you can heal and blood pacts don't add addition hate to you. Which is why they are nice main healers.

Kipsy I don't know why you're clapping at Cubswoo, or why Yoshinder is arguing with him. He pretty much agreed SMN are capable main healers and he accepts doing it. While saying it'd be nice certainly if he could just be a pure DD. But that it won't happen until later level.

And really. How many people as a party leader, actually would invite a SMN over a BLM in hopes to get more experience points? BLMs can do loads of damage they only steal hate when they doo too much in too short of time. Avatars do all their damage compressed into one minute, and usually don't steal hate. And forgetting the hate management side, assuming your tank can hold hate anyway cause he's decent, who is gonna kill the mob faster for more xp?

Regardless of what SMNs were "intended to do", while they lack some cure spells they can actually cure more HPs than any WHM before running out. In addition their special abilities, which include several forms of curaga and a few strong attacks, don't add hate to their healing hate. Isn't it obviously what they can be used most efficiently for? But yea, I keep hearing advice get thrown around like "sub BLM so they don't make you heal". Basically anything to get out of healing and just using bloodpacts like it's their main job.

And worst of all is when it's rubs off, and people are asking me to just use bloodpacts and there's already a WHM. I'm saying to myself. Sheesh I'm wasting MPs doing this crappy aerial armor for mandies. I blink away 1 and a half rounds and that's it. I could be doing the WHMs job instead and the occasional thunderspark when my MPs get high enough. Then the WHM could be a BLM and we'd be chaining like mad. But that's just how I think,

Another point I'd like to point out, in terms of FUN vs XP/HOUR: Personally I feel it's more fun for me, as a BLM with a Paladin tank versus a Ninja tank. I get to nuke more, plain and simple. What's really fun is RDM BRD PLD and 3 BLM. I get to nuke like CRAZY and the PLD can keep hate cause of ballad and refresh. But sheesh I never recalled putting in my comment "Paladin tank only" because I only would accept the party invite that allowed me to do the most damage. Yet Summoiners do that sometimes. "Healing X" I see it so so often now. They aren't willing to party unless they are able to cause the most damage possible, regardless of what setup might yield the most xp. But if BLM wanted to just nuke like crazy on a Nin tank they'd be considered an idiot overnuker, not some guy who wants to have fun. But SMN wants to bloodpact at the cost of MPs to be used for healing and continuing the chain and more xp/hour, and they are just trying to "play their job correctly." Such hypocricy.

A good chunk of blood pacts aren't too useful and such, but at 36, in the parties I'm in, I can easily set the party up with something like..
THF - SATA Viper Bite
Leviathan - Tail Whip (roughly 240 damage + Gravity effect)
SCs Detonation for roughly 100
Then, if we have a BLM, he can happily MB. So yeh....no blood pact is absolutely godly, but if applied right, they're all useful in their own situations. Also, kindof wondering why no one here's discussed SMN/BLM yet...though I guess that's as "OMFGNUB" as someone subbing BRD, despite it getting easier hate than WAR-vokes.. =P

Well of course you wouldn't give Blinkga for fighting mandies, Fire. They hit for little damage and hit so often that absorbing a few hits won't do much for everyone. As Spellbind suggested, Ice Spikes on everyone (I can't remember the name of Shiva's BP that does that) would be much more effective, as it can paralyze the mandy and its high attack speed means more damage dealt over time than if used against a much slower attacking mob, like Goblins. Which, incidentally, are the perfect type of mob to use Aerial Armor against. And they're in the same spot, and most people exp off both gobs and mandies in the same party. So you can give everyone Ice Spikes when the puller comes back with a mandy, and Blink when there's a gob on the way.

Think of a Summoner as a toolbox. They have all sorts of unique tools, and each one is suited for a different situation. You don't pull a pair of pliers out of a toolbox to take out a screw, you use a screwdriver. In other words, make sure you pick the right tool for the job, there are no BPs that are good for every single situation.

Also, there is one thing that Fire said that I think is worth mentioning...

How many people as a party leader, actually would invite a SMN over a BLM in hopes to get more experience points?

Well, static parties aside (as I said before, I static with Spellbind so I pretty much have to have a SMN in my parties :P ), I would probably invite a BLM instead of a SMN to be a damage dealer. But what are the chances of a BLM -and- a SMN of the same level being lfg at the same time? Very slim. And if I want a mage that can be a backup healer if something bad happens (WHM runs out of MP, we get a link, WHM DCs, etc), and the only person lfg that can fill that role is a SMN, I'm gonna ask him/her to join. You can't always have a "perfect" party. You either work with what's available, or you go home, as I'm sure a few of those other party members you've got would rather try to get a party that is going to fight, than sit around while you wait for the "perfect" job to show up.

And like others have said before, in the mid levels, SMN also makes a very good support mage, similar to RDM or BRD, and can also work as a SC opener or closer, as they have weapon skills in just about every box in the SC chart

I know it was stupid to do aeriel on Mandy. At that level however there was only aerial armor and thunderspark really. MY PT asked me to do aerial armor, I suggested different but that's what they wanted. /sigh... even thunderspark to be terribly honest doesn't = enough damage to be near worth a slot.

By the way, if you try to parse the damage done by Frost Armor, giving all members frost spikes. It's still not good damage. It's 68 MPs, before you factor in the MPs for casting shiva and perpetuation cost during the time of casting the blood pact. All for less than 100 damage. That's less than a 2 dmg / mp ratio EVEN ON the fastest attacking mobs like mandies.

Note: This is a sensible enough bloodpact to do if you're the main healer and have extra MPs. Way more MP efficient than for instance banish. And yet again, no added hate.

Some other useful tricks playing as a DD/backup heal SMN 70+

SATA partner. Don't want your MNK soaping up dmg as the first voke for an SATA? No prob... no hate spike onto anyone... just throw a spinning dive and your avatar has the hate... line up behind him and bam, SATA. No problem... release avatar once hate is established and your melee are worry free!

Other things to note about how blood pact damage seems to work... Chaotic Strike, Ramuh's lvl 70 is not as strong as the others... it's a 3 hit attack (not sure what weapon alignment) that has a latent stun effect built in. This stun seems to be more potent than the Stun spell if it lands... but again, it can hit and not kick the Stun in at all... or it can miss like any other BP. Overall the normal damage from this isn't too impressive, but I've seen some sick critical hits with it for the upper 1500s by ulikummi camp. It is able to stun a mob for up to 8-10 seconds (record time on weapons in ru'avitau), or as short as 3 seconds. Ramuh seems to be good against weapons and golems though... why? I don't know though.

Ifrit's 70 pact hits 3 times and adds enfire to his strikes... basically it may seem like weak shit but use it on anything that's weak to fire and you'll see exponential damage increase... I find him better used for killing weaker mobs faster... where Predator claws hits for 1200 on a normal blow, Flaming Crush can break 2k (record dmg on a Lich, 3282 <_<)... of course a critical is insane... I think my record dmg critical on an IT mob (spartoi) was 1900 something.

Mountain Buster, Titan's lvl 70 has the MNK hand-to-hand attribute, bashing which is much more effective on bone and pot mobs... as opposed to Spinning Dive. This one is more reliable because it's a one shot pact that deals decent dmg... even on a critical, but it's kind of limited for weaker mobs and isn't the strongest since it's only one hit. Also adds bind, which has it's own uses ;D

Spinning Dive is the other single hit pact, Leviathan's... not too strong but it does better against tougher mobs by landing all the dmg in one blow... can break mid 1000s with a critical but is the most accurate pact of all. Might have piercing attribute (like a polearm type) but I don't know for sure.

Predator Claws is your generic cannon pact, does well against most mob types, but being 3 hits it can miss easier, or critical for insane damage.

Rush is probably the only one I haven't found to be useful... it adds no effects, does shitty damage (even though it's a 5-hitter) and doesn't add anything particularly useful to my DD belt... so ummm Shiva kinda sucks :P

Fenrir really... only seems useful as a farming tool. His eclipse bite's damage really blows but he's cheap to keep out compared to the other avatars... and bite only takes 100 mp whereas the avatar's 70 pacts take 160 some... so I usually choose him for fighting weaker stuff or to tank in a skillup party... or just to get in some okay damage for 60 less mp.

i havent ready through the whole thread, but for the main comment on this, smn can be a main healer, however, it is not the best option. a smn is just that, a smn. its not a tank, its not a nuker, etc. its like asking the rng of a pt to be the main tank and bring the argument of, "well you have nin sub, you can blink tank" sorry but that just doesnt cut it. iif its a blink pt, a smn could be the main healer, but it is hard for him/her to keep up with heals because they just dont get the cure spells at the same time as whm.

there is my 2 cents worth

I agree that a WHM is probably better for a PLD PT, maybe, usually, I guess. Certainly better for a WAR tank PT. But you also must admit that Nin tanks are definetly becoming more popular among NA Certainly more nins out there than SMN. And a SMN >can< main heal for a pld pt. And a nin >can< tank mandies. Neither of these are ideal, but smn continues to be main healer and nin continues to be main tnak in its state of optimum usefulness..

Honestly having seen a summoner growing from little level 10 till 70, its much clear about their role. First of you understand that the blood pact untill at least 50 is on a 1 min timer. Even with full Austare gear you still have a 55~56 sec timer. A summoner has to judge during that timer what is best for the party pre 70s. Yes pre 70s, since around 70s usually you unleash the 70 blood pacts with occational (and minimal) support pacts. Why occational? Because around 70s, the difference of level between you and the highest mob become lower and lower. Accuracy becomes less of a problem and you want fast kills. So that means damage rules, so summoners are shifted towards the offensive role with some healing, depending on the situation and how bad the melees get hit. But usually their pacts are used on offensive sides. The support and curative side can be covered with their whm sub.

Although you have to understand, during those blood pact cooling time it can happen unexpected things. Its not a question of if a person received so and so damage what can a cureIII do? Its not what a so and so spell can do, you should do to be helpfull to the party without question. Remember, a main healer does not mean the only healer. Party work people, if a tank receive 1k damage for some reason, a summoner uses cureIII, other healers should use cures to support the tank. Too many people in here believes main healer = only healer forgetting about other people are there to support you (Hopefully).

People have fun in a different way. Some people have played more than 2 years and their main character is still 30~60s. Other people who played the same amount has alot of 75 jobs etc. What I fail to see is people adapting their style of play to match the party needs. I have played 3 jobs till reaching 75, and I would say my role in each job had mixed feeling both hating and enjoying. As a rdm I hated doing refresh, debuff, sit, 24/7 when I got invited. But it is the role that I must fullfill to be usefull or at the least to acomplish the task what the party offered to me. You saw many rdms complaining the rdm getting boring correct, for just doing those 3 tasks in the group. People put melee into the table to at least not die of boredom. I understand how they feel. How ever, I felt that meleeing was pretty much not productive. Also it hinders what I was doing, making it difficult for the party to operate with me being in the front, forgetting more important matters. Then again, on parties that I form with a group of friend, specifically a group of LS members everything goes. Since exp itself is not the only fun factor, all members sub what they please. Non of them gets angry for having a war/blm or drk/whm. Or even rdm doing melee all the time with some debuffing, summoners attacking with avatar out, all goes in there.

So this is my view of having fun. Amoung strangers, your no1 priority should be placed on the party and not yourself. To have fun yourself sometimes will lead to giving unpleasant time to the other party members. Hence, look at the rant section. This is a prime example of some members not doing what they were suppose to do. I presume that very person who caused trouble wanted to have some fun doing what ever he/she pleases. In a party amoung strangers, you don't know if everyone moves as you think, if everyone does the task as you think. However, amoung friends you know that your members will do the things they were suppose to do and you give much trust to them than complete strangers (Who doesn't).

All this arguments will lead in my view one conclusion. Lack of adapting to the party. Usually this comes from being in a static (IMHO that is). Since their way of playing eighther never changes, and also people trust each other more than strangers.

Good points Shia.

Something else I'd like to ask you all. At higher level, do any of you debate that in >most< situations Ninja will give more exp/hour than paladin? Maybe like some of you think in most situations SMN gives more xp/hour than WHM in most situations? All of you would grab a PLD if there was no NIN available. And in some circumstances ( ei. you know this PLD personally and you are friends / he is a great paladin / his gear is phenomenal ) might take the PLD first. Or maybe your setup has high damage DD and no SATA so you need a PLD more. But in the game you get a NIN tank, you don't turn around and invite a PLD as a damage dealer and tell him to whip on his great sword 'cause nothing else is availble.

It seems like all the actually summoners on this board think 90% like I do, and it's the BLMs and WHMs who are pissed off. I'm just saying more often than not the actually summoners I see in game refuse to heal. I am seeing this /blm shit popping up left and right. At least then I KNOW not to invite you. I mean seriously. Look at Firsttriad or whatever his name is. I remember he has serket ring because an LS member thought it was my name, then I see his SMN in PT with a god damn blm sub. Why would you waste 2 million gil on a ring if you're just gonna piss the 25 extra MPs away by throwing it on a gimped out job? Come on people, a SMN who can't even backup heal? That's just one example of many. Type /sea all SMN inv 1-75 sometime people, check out all the /blm or the ones that have "no healer" on their commentl. Then of those without ask how many would be willing to main heal and how many just use that sub to look pretty.
I remember when I just started no NA Ninja wouldn't tank either. Most didn't even have Utsusemi. They just said "Nin is a DD not a tank." You know how often Nin would get PT? When nothing else was seeking. Hell I don't even know what I'm saying anymore. It's all just a snowball of bad experiences with SMN and people in general who fail to understand their job. Like moron RDM who sub nin and don't debuff. Why does this board decide one way is the right way to play a job and another isn't? The most efficient xp/hour is the only standard possible. RDM AF is a sword, so obviously they should melee right? Or maybe they should sit back and use a club for better mage stats. I don't really get it. You all know club is better xp/hour. You all know sitting back is better xp/hour. Yet the game seems designed with a frontline RDM bashing away with a sword in mind.

So I say to hell with the game's design. If they wanted Avatars to be damage dealers, then they should give them some god damn damage. If they wanted them to be support jobs, give carbuncle something useful like lvl 50 refreshga. Right now the best thing they can do is heal because you can't screw that up too much, and they've got the capability and their avatars support it. The avatars boodpacts that are damage dealer I admit are numerous but they all just happen to suck. No hate yes, but they don't steal hate anyway. They don't come close. And their entire minute's damage is compressed into 1 attack. You'd think if they were any sort of damage dealer they'd take hate every damn time. Compress a BLM's damage of 30 seconds into a single hit, he'll take hate usually.

So yet again, say FU to squaresoft for not balancing the jobs quite right, by playing jobs as they yield most xp/hour instead of how "they were intended." How else are they gonna realize there's a problem unless they see SMNs given the clear impression they are main healers. Maybe then they'll realize that WHM need more to do when their MPs are full like WHM only spells similar to haste but giving other buffs. For example more attack power. I always felt WHMs needed something like this to combat the high level preference of RDM and BRD instead of WHM.

But anyway, just take my advice, and question the average SMN outthere you'll see looking for party. Find out if their playing style is gonna help your party have a great exp run.

Note: This is true of all jobs, for some reason SMN just keeps getting under the radar cause no one really PTs with SMNs often enough to make a sound judgement. Ironically it seems like all the higher lvl SMN agree with me.

Ok,I skipped most of the last few pages but I'm pretty sure most of you are still complaining about smn being whatever, ending up in the over all point that smn are not only good at healing. Please, I'm told of being told this, I've pted this weekend with a smn (not saying names) who I have to say has completly pissed me off, because he'd rather summon shiva do his crappy damage and let the pld die. Here is the final logic, endo infomation, and unless you have hard, strong, proof, please, do not say I am wrong. Also a note. I am not anti smn. I still have a strong respect for smn, I still consider myself a smn, as when I talk about smn I often say "we this and that" even though i have quit smn. I also have a high respect for my ex -smn peers and friends such as Answa, Svina, and Areia. That being said:

Summoners are healers formost.

Now, I myself do not proclaim myself god of knowledge, but after leveling smn 70 fricking levels (and taking that long to finally realize this myself), I strongly believe this.

I'm going to state the points people brought up and rip them to shreds, as well as give my own point of view. But first, some things to leave out and things I do not want to heal about.

What smn can do outside of pt, what smn was designed for by S-E (please.. I'm told 3000 times ninja was not made to be a tank, get over it, {That's too bad} it turned out to be a tank, even if the frikin high evasion and agi don't scream tank [which it does], it's being used as tank), smn 70+. I might of forgot some but oh well. Here goes.

Smn are DD: No. They are not. The only DD mage is blm.Being a damage dealer means you can easily and only deal in damage, and can do it at a consistent rate. Thus, Thieves are not DD. Smn are not DD. I'm going to slap the next person that tells me SMn can outdamage drk and compare to blm. THEY CAN NOT. If you even use the word Blood Pact stop, because you are already wrong. PERHAPS if the timer was not one min, things might be different, but as is it's not the cast. Avatar damage on XP mobs (IT and VT) is horrible, and a lot of the time a pld can do more or about the same damage. Not to mention to pay mp for that, unless you use carby. (woooo -_-) To tell the truth, normal avatar melee is only useful in soloing, and I supose that is fair enough as smn melee is weak as hell, they need to kill mobs somehow alone. You can tell avatars do a lot more damage as the con of mobs drops. Anyways back to DD smn. Yes, waaaay later, at 65 (if you have fenrir) and at 70, you can deal some decent damge in a PT, but no where near what a sam, or drg, and def. a drk can deal in that one min time span. Thus smn are not DD and will never be DD.

Smn fill in support just like a rdm or bard.
Hahahaha no. I'm rdm now, and please let me be the first to tell you the two are nothing alike. And yes I have pted with a bard at the same time (Fallen is a nice bard ), and bard and rdm have about the same main duties with different perks. Now, when I say perk I'm talking about other things a job can do not based around their main purpose. Smn and bard's main purpose is refresh, and dispel, which I say off the bat smn can not do. (Please do not bring up fenrir's dispel ability, again due to that damn 1 min timer) Now, for perks rdm can help heal, help nuke to toss in some damage, and as a main perk they can weaken down the monster like hell, with high enfeebling skill.(Damn you frikin whm and blm who think your enfeebling skill is more friking important then a rdm's.) Bard's perk is heavy heavy, team mate related support, in the form of buff songs and weakening songs. (again the weaken down of monters is present in both classes to a degree, and not present at all in a smn) Now, anyone with half a brain can see a smn is no replacment at all for either bard or rdm, and never will be. Some of us have to go with gimped pt's, it's impossible to always have the ideal pt, but just realize you're not getting the same deal if you happen to go with a smn if no rdm or bards are present.

Smn can't heal naturaly so they are not main healers.
{That's too bad} As I'm sure most of you have stated and I myself have stated, ninja and pld can't tank without a subjob of war. Yes, I know there are some twists out there, and in some pt's they might work, but we are not talking about what works, only about what works best. So smn need whm sub to heal? Good. Nothing wrong with that. More on this in a bit.

Rdm make better healers then smn so why have a smn main heal when I can get a rdm? See?
Ya well lets pretend 90% of all rdm are not elvaan without serket rings and astral rings and mp gear (which only brings them up to par with taru, hume, mithra and not farther) Ok good. Now, yes it's possible for a rdm to main heal, despite their slightly smaller mp stores, in a good pt (even better if with a ninja of course), but I wouldn't recomend it unless there isn't anything else. A rdm is always better used to it's normal tasks, and that is support healing as needed freshing ect ect. However, smn are completly better healers then rdm in the same way whm are.

I think that's all... if I remember or see any new points rest assured I will coment on them. >.>

Already I have heard a lot of people stating facts that are completly wrong or mostly, and they keep defending them.

Now for the supremeness, why I believe smn are main healers and nothing else. I'm a man of logic, you prove me wrong and prove it through example or infomation, whatever, and I will bow to you. Just remember I have the pleasure of level smn to 70, so when someone says fenrir did 1300 damage on an IT mob, I know they are very likely full of bullshit, setting aside the fact that's what a drk can do with a SC + other melee + SC effect, while still doing more damage over time normally, hell a drg can.

Ok, first of all let's look at a smn's abilities. I know all the Blood Pacts by heart now. Of which do damage:

Level 70 pacts: Roughly all the same, of differents hits and elements. Only ones that don't have these are fenrir and carby. These do incredible damage on weaker mobs, and as long as a smn can avoid running out of mp and if the mob doesn't kill the avatar too fast, can rip many monsters to shred solo. In a pt setting however, they do around 400 damage for me, which is maybe one blm spell at that level. I doubt they go past 1000 at any rate on XP mobs. A Drk, sam, rng, blm,war and drg (true DD) can easily out do that. However, it is nice for throwing in some extra damage if you have perhaps a ninja tank or something, or otherwise don't end up wasting much of your mp.

Level 65 pacts. Besides carby's, which is pathetic, fenrir's final BP is just about the same as the 70 ones. You just get it 5 levels sooner.

Various Wannabe's:
I'm talking axe kick, double slap, double punch, ice 2 and ice 4, ect ect. These hardly do much damage, at most 500 if you are lucky, more likely then not 100-200 damage (if even). Level 2 and 4 spells sound like god, but in truth suck and you will feel that a lot when you are standing next to a blm. Mostly for that "Give me something to do with my massive mp" case, and does nice damage (about 500 mostly for level 4 spells, again not too bad considering you are a smn) when MBed. The rest seem to be more SC starter/enders (ooo, but what were they before that patch? Hmm...),

All other Blood Pacts are considered support. Now, I'm going to lean heavily on my on experience so please excuse me. In any pt I would call even decent, I would only be able to cast about 2 buffs if I, being a good smn, wanted it up most of the time. This is because by the time one wore out my BP timer was up, and when it was up again the other buff wears, creating a endless circle. Again, these depend on what you use.

Most common and useful buffs a smn has:
Fenrir's Evasion and Accu up.
Fenrir's all stat up
Hastega from Garuda.

Stoneskinga/blinkga: might be nice for a ninja, to help out (stoneskin that is), but besides that it only buys the tank if a pld maybe 4 seconds of no damage, not worth the BP time/mp 90% of the time. Also, must melee can take a few hits so they don't need it, if the pld or ninja loses hate a lot you've got a problem anyways.

All other BP are mostly useless or trival in comparison. Yes I hear people preaching about enthunder and such, and maybe early on it is better then nothing, but if you think something like thunderspark (really only good for it's para effect in pt's) or ice spikes is better then those three up there, get your head checked. Fenrir's tho abilities I have listed run out so that you ended up always casting both or lose one. That is to say my BP is up when Stat + wears and by the time my BP is up again Accu and evasion up wears, and so it repeats. While all these are nice, and yes that is ALL A SMN CAN DO SETTING ASIDE SUB JOBS, you can to be crazy to waste a whole spot on your pt with something like that. I regret back when I was crazy like so that I didn't thank my pt's (when I got one and when it was good) on forming such a nice pt with only 5 and 1/2 people. Really, it's like asking a rdm to join, but NOT to refresh or dispel, only enfeeble, like telling a whm to join but NOT heal, only haste, enfeeble a bit, toss a regen here and there with some protects, and start spaming dia, banish 2, and holy. And don't tell me it isn't. I'm sure I'd invite a person just so I can have enthunder, or so I can have blink every min. Stuff I can very well do without, maybe get another blm and call things 10 times faster. Oh sure, that accu up and stat bonus is nice, despite you might only really use dex and str if you are a DD, maybe vit or agi if you are a ninja or tank, but if your other stats are already low (like a pld's str) bonus's in other stats won't do much good. A bard can probably match the evasion bonus, still refresh and dispel, and boost attack. I'm not sure how far those stat boosts go but I'm sure a bard can top it or match it, and without waiting a min too. Subbing anything but whm for a smn, is of course, completly stupid.

Rdm,blm, brd might have some nice things but none of them will help you enough. Like a pld who has nice def and vit, all those def + abilities, he can't put it too use without the proper sub, war. You have a massive storage of mp, now that we know in pt your avatars are only sub par towards a pt's contrubtion, lets pick out a sub job:

Rdm: While pretty close to whm, you still missing out on ga spells, a lot of the status curing spells, more mp, divine see, ect ect..

Blm: Unlike whm, you will only end up with first level ga spells, and maybe a few level 2 spells. Now now, I'm sure you will be able to do SOME damage to the enemy, but to consider yourself a match or a replacment for blm is a really funny joke. A rdm could probably do more damage, I'd rather get a rdm nuke then a smn, and this as a main really weakens what you can be doing, and are still pretty useless to a pt. However, for soloing I might add this is a pretty fun subjob, mostly because weak enemys are weak to anything, hell I can even club them with my staff for nice damage.

Brd: I'm sure the few songs you will be able to cast will help in your sub suportive role, and this is the only main/subjob other then whm with smn I can see might work out. At the very least, if you don't have a bard in the pt, you can be somewhat useful. The songs you can use are limited however, and the best songs are too high for you to sub.

Whm: B-I-N-G-O. Yes. Finally, you are on the right track. I'm not saying whm makes smn god, but it makes them much much much more useful. "Oh there goes sanjo, retarted and bias" Well, once again please prove me wrong. Until then I will continue.

Curing knows no levels, as I love to say. Even without mp gear, unlike int and blm, you will still hit the healing cap very easily. As far as curing goes, you will only miss out on cure 4, which is 90% of the time an emergency cure, and cure 5 which only whm have and of which I have not seen used in combat, only afterwards. Even in emergencies whm chose rather to use cure 4 to get the hurt team mate out of red, and then normal cure 3's to bring them back up. As smn don't be saddened you don't have cure 4, as 90% of the time you will have a rdm or bard. (if not start crying because your pt is already more or less doomed, and if not you are already in a godly pt, too godly to be affected by no refresh much) They will provide that cure 4 as needed, as thats why most bards sub whm anyways, to help in their support role and why rdm can cure. Well, what else do you lose? Higher level protects to be sure, which is bad but your protectra too is better then nothing, trust me. Also, most pld can buff themselves, and if not (like a nin tank) a rdm can fill in if you have it.. Honestly anyways more of the advanced players (mostly jpn) and me myself only cast protect on puller and tank unless there is a special case. Most whm caste the -ga probably because they see the singles as useless and just buy the -ga to save some cash. What else do you lose? Well a very few of the higher level status cures (Stona glares mostly in my mind). Just remember that if a whm ever calls you up on that laugh in their snobby little face, as you can cure any status effect that you lack the whm levels due to sub in (like stona) with Spring Water, and cure at the same time to boot. Not as quick, the time limit on BP also kicks in, and at times the mp cost, but you still can. I've easily taken care of petrification in Den of Rancor after being told many times that I frankly suck in that regard and won't be able to keep up with the unstoning. Gregor never had a complaint, and neither did anyone in the group as they saw I could easily handle it. (Gregor was a godly pld also, even when the liz in those rare times did petri right after I cured it, he kept hate while petrified. ^^) Besides that.. I belive you don't have the tele, which is too bad we don't want to be unbalanced and godly here, it's not a rocket science to pick up a whm for a tele for your pt, and higher level raises. Well, the raise thing is unfortunate, and that's just too bad. The simplest reply would be not to die, heh. Yes, I do know mistakes do happen, but for what it's worth, being able to do anything but raise one has little to do with being a healer, not even rdm can do higher then raise 1. Also Reraise same along those lines.

Now, those things that smn can't get from subbing whm is a GOOD thing, we don't want them to be exact clones, would be no point. Like rdm and bard are basically the same class, each has a few differences that make them completly different. A whm's extra abilities, like being able to silence, haste, are as I said what I call perks. Supplements to a job's main abilitiy. Cure 3 worked completly fine all the way to 70, and I really really doubt that would change 70-75. I've often hated how invites where so low (comparing this to samurai and OMG, rdm. I get invites without lfg or search message this is new to me.heh), and then 90% of those invites were because I could heal and heal damn well.

A Smn has high mp, and auto regen, plus clear mind, and an ungimped one because it's a smn abilitiy not one gotten off a subjob. Cure 3 heals just as much as a whm. Now, with my higher mp and mp recovery with comparable equipment, I can be just as good, and yes, even better then a whm at curing in raw cure power. Sure they can cure more at once then I, but that is a price smn have to deal with. After all, nothing beats whipping out Healing Ruby II (basically a cure 3 or 4 I believe) without getting even a sliver of hate. Whm can't brag about that, heh. Curaga 1 and curaga 2 (Healing Whisper and Spring Water) are the same way. Now, we know now smn are very good at healing. And they are. They can easily take over most of a whm's main roles, and do it very well, which is what counts. Now, of course, as most of you blankly repeat over and over, smn are smn, not whm. That means they do things their way, that's were smn's PERKS come in, that is your Blood Pacts and such to add to your usefullness to the pt other then healing. When I see a smn summon, send shiva to attack, and makes me end up wasting a lot of mp healing most of the group to keep them from dying, at the same time having the mages (smn included -_-) whining about refresh, and the melee asking me to please enfeeble and dispel, I get very very pissed off. The smn is either full mp because thank god we are godly, the mob dies fast, yet a ton of people are yellow or lower and I'm already out of mp, or he has no mp and I have no mp becaue he burned it all with BP that are not making this any easier and is def. not healing. WORSE, when I remind him he is main healer, and he whines "Well what about you, you are a rdm get healing, by the way toss me a refresh plz." and I just want to yell at him and rip his throat out... I have a task to do, and I'm a support job over all, he has way more mp then I, can heal it faster and easier, and really has nothing else to do because what he IS doing with his avatars is not only useless in the greater veiw, but pathetic too. This is when I realize how much of an ass I must of been, how usless I was, when I did the very same so long ago. I still regret I can not appologize to all those pt's for not realizing i am a healer that much sooner. Now of course if it's like a ninja tank, when even I at times find myself with plenty of mp and nothing to do, times when I melee to skill up and add the few damage I can for what it's worth, and the smn melee's with avatar and buffs and crap that is all fine as healing is hardly needed, mostly then not with a ninja.

And of course, when I get a smn who casts protectga 2, and I shortly after cast protect 3 on the tank and puller, and they ask if I could refresh them first (after me of course) and heal at the start of battles. When they rush up to do hastega or maybe later on accu and evasion up, then come back and start curing the pld. Maybe work something out with me so I cure everytime they go up to buff and keep them refreshed, so they make the most of their BP WHILE healing, I see a very godly class, one I am proud to have in my pt, and one I would take over a whm. Whm seem to becoming fucks anyways. Domi for example. Think becaue he is whm he is god. Frikin goes the wrong way the fucking idiot in gustav, tells us to stop moving though we've been waiting at the same place for a few min, and then warps himself out afte disbanding. I'd really love to take smn over whm, but saddly most smn don't "do the main heal thing" That's too bad. It really is.

Anyways, please, by all means. If you have some good logic , I'm all ears.

Thank you Sanjo. That's pretty much the whole logic I worked out in my head trying to make a DD out of SMN on my way to 30 and finding myself coming up short. But you certainly have loads more experience as to what's most effective.

If summoners were supposed to be main healers, they'd be called white mages. Summoners, are supposed to summon, SE just haven't made the summoning worth while until high level.

I hate this argument and believe it was covered on the Flameboard some months ago.

Should summoners heal? YES! You shouldn't be sitting on your ass between your 1 min blood pact timer when your party members lives are in the yellow.

Should summoners also summon? YES! Sweet lord, summoners go through a lot of crap to get all those shiney little avatars and I'll be damned if I'm not going to use them.

Should you ask a summoner if they want to main heal if your expectation of them is to only main heal and not use avatars? Shit yeah. I'm a jack of all trades even without that purple puppy and never feel that I'm wasting the spot of a potentially usefull member, as I am a very useful member to my parties especially when I'm using my Bloodpacts. I've never really met a summoner that minded main healing unless it was either A) A PLD/WAR or a WAR/MNK as main tank or B) They were asked to not use avatars at all.

A) PLD/WAR and WAR/MNK tanks scare me. Cure III is great but when someone gets hit with a spider's scythe or a bat's jet stream it takes quite a few Cure IIIs to get their life back in the white. Those Cure IIIs have quite a bit of downtime between casts and I only get one Divine Seal every 10 minutes. Do you know how scary it is having a PLD tank in the Quicksand Caves at level 45, when you're the only party there and you're taking on Spiders? Sickle Slash + PLD + SMN as main healer with no Raise = Big Problems. I'm all about Main healing with a NIN or WAR/NIN tank and wouldn't even consider asking a WHM to join in this situation.

B) It's an awful lot of work to get those avatars and at our core we are summoners. We didn't choose the job because we enjoyed WHM, if we wanted to be WHMs we'd play WHMs. Main healing is great, I don't mind it at all unless it's like a point A situation and even then I'll bite the bullet. However - I've heard a lot of assholes invite SMNs to ONLY heal. This is like asking a RDM to only Refresh....actually it's worse because at least Refresh is a RDM spell. If you're inviting a SMN to only heal and bitch at them when they want to use some blood pacts this one goes out to you t(-_-t)

PS: Damn Cubs...You're lucky. Most of my staves were 150-220k! :x

Also to add to that expensive list of gear at 50-60 you can throw in a Steppe stone for 350k-500k at level 50.
