for some jobs, skill -> gear.... like for BLM or WHM or even SMN... they really dont need "pro" gear, maybe a few cheap int rings (dont have to be HQ) or maybe cheap ele rings, a mp band and maybe sum AF weapon for mages.. or even the wands that give INT/MND? for whm, smn, blm and even rdm you need skill to be good, if no skill with good gear = you blow balls at any lv

for melees, gimp gear isnt good, you can prolly let it slide on the "1mil+ items", but by lv.55+ you shuld have good or even great gear. NIN + PLD
and THF require lots of skill... if not, your either gunna be pwnd fast and die, or be hated like ooqoo and oopoo >.>

eaither way, it depends what job... for THF, PLD, NIN you need Skill+Items ;) :twisted:

Wow i missed this part the 1st time, YOU REALLY are close minded wtf, MNK mastered at 1..2..???? how stupid are you to a melee job, sure take some idiot and let him play a MNK job, say his MNK is lv 2, (a friend of yours) let him play say, ur MNK60 see how well he does, IF HE MASTERED it suuuuuure he'll be just fine i'm sure of it because apperantly you can master MNK in 2 lvs...
 
I can't help but agree with one point in all of this. Most Paladins I've seen/helped are morons and have no clue how to act in situations. And before you get your panties into a bunch, remember that most PLD is out of over probably 300 on the server. So no, it's probably not you.

I must agree some mage jobs skill is more important. But at the end of the day, the BLM with all his staves is gonna outdamage the hell out of the blm with junk. Unless their strategy is just abysmal like some idiot blm/smn I know who liked to melee and just spam random acient magic.

There are only 2 jobs where I feel that perhaps skill > equipment, that is if the skill difference is huge and the equipment difference isnot so bad. And those are BRD and WHM. These are high demand jobs that tend to piggy back their way cause people will kepe inviting them and keep them no matter how much they are worthless because they don't wanna wait for a decent one and just want xp. (I guess shitty parties don't matter so much to people who don't spend tremendous amounts of money / hour on ninja tools.
But yes, provided they cover the very basics, I'd take a BRD that's really hard working and knows what they are doing versus some idiot in a vermillion cloak doing whatever he feels like.
Obviously as has been pointed out, someone who takes the >time< to earn something expensive like vermillion cloak would care enough to learn how to do their job correctly, but unfortuntaely, the problem is that the problem is these people just aren't lazy, they're stupid. RDM/NIN isn't a lazy combination. It's stupid. Nin is more expensive and difficult to get to 37 than BLM, and yet people level it, cause they are self centered, want to do what's the absolutely most fun for them without thinking about their team. And maybe they'll have some rather expensive melee gear, and no fucking mage gear at all. Stupid, not lazy. Hell I've seen RDMs popping chiefkabobs and shit.

But basic melee DDs... drk,sam, mnk, drg, no your job isn't hard. The fact some jackass can fuck it up proves nothing. I can stick my dick in a light socket it doesn't mean plugging a lamp in is hard.
 
I agree with Vang, knowing how to play your job is good and dandy, but if you don't have the expected gear for your level your still a fucking gimp.

drk,thf,drg,sam etc without snipers during tp gaining are gimp, your skill in "auto attacking" is not going to save you no matter what. And it really doesn't take much of a brain to figure out how to work these jobs properly, if you find it confusing by midlevels still you're a retard, have a cookie.

I don't and I'm sure Vang is not supporting "retards" with uber gear. But to use the " Skill > gear " arguement to not farm for the main items and spells of your job is fucking lame. If you're too damn cheap to farm for the above average gear by 55/60 then stop trying to think of a bullshit excuse. Just claim you're satisfied with only reaching 75% of your potienal and rather enjoy being medicore.

And the "I'd rather have a person with good knowledge but only average gear than..." arguement, it's a ton of ****ing BS most of the time. What percentage of people with above average gear for there level actually suck, I can recall almost no such events. People that take the time to farm for their job more likely also understand the job they play and its limits, strengths, and weaknesses. Who farms for tons of their expected/quality stuff and has no idea of how the game works...Excluding gilbuyers for being dipshits. Normally people with only average gear make average players because excluding gilbuyers, their equipment is a direct reflection of their attitude to a job, exceptions though existing.

call me a gimp but i've said it before adn i'll say it again i'm not going to spend three months farming for teh best equipment. I will farm for good equipment and maybe one or two items here and there but i'll be damned if im gonna spend half my time playing this game just trying to get some damned gil to buy "better" equipment with. i play this game to have fun and that much farming is not fun to me.

and if you all want to sit back and think, you fucking gimp you suck at this game you can go right ahead cause if you're gonna take it that god damned seriously i dont want to play with your stupid ass anyway.

fun > equipment regardless of wether or not equipment > skill.
 
Jagster, nobody here is defending gimps. It's been made clear that they expect peeps to have the appropriate gear/spells for their level. We are however saying that I'd rather take a WHM w/o erase at level 40 that knows how to manage MP, keep the party alive without taking hate from the tank and rest when needed than the idiot WHM I had the opportunity to party with a while back that spammed erase just because they could.

In some cases just because you know how to fish/farm/craft/NM hunt doesn't mean you function well as a valuble party member. If you wrap a peice of shit in gold, it's still a peice of shit.
Good Players + Good gear = YAY
Good Players + Great Gear = WOW
Bad Players + Great gear = Shitty Party
 
Sabia I know what you mean and I agree with it. But people use this whole arguement " Skill > Gear" as an excuse to not buy certain things, and I'm not even talking about crazy items such as +1 snipers, +1 hauby, +1 harness, I find them a luxery as much as the next person does. But when people are lacking mage spells, lacking snipers by the late 50s, lacking scorpion harness by the late 60s, lacking hauby by the middle 60s, having no staves other than ice and dark for a blm or smn, or never purchasing a weapon over 100k even in basiclly their whole career, it's gimp. That list wasn't an all high and mighty list, it's stuff to prevent one from being gimp for X level.

Again to me it's not the fact people refuse to go for gear to make them better than bad/medicore, it's that they hide this with dumb reasoning. I'm not going to say this and try to talk down to people if that's anyone's impression. For my level I'm overall pleased with my gear but I always farm for the next big item on my list because it can make me better, skill isn't going to make my SATA more powerful, gear is. And I always will continue to reach for the next big piece because it'll make me better, skill / intelligence or whatever one wants to call it will only go so far.

Again I'd hate being with a very well equipped moron as well, but normally people with good equipment take their job role seriously, they make for better xp partners for xp/hr goes. No farming doesn't carry out much into party skill, but again these people are serious about their preformence around others. And please don't get the impression I'm a real hardass, I like to have a good time when I xp since we have to do it so much, may as well enjoy it, by this I mean fun conversations and jokes. I don't find 4-5k per hour as such a hard thing to ask for at my level, if that goal isnt' being reached, more than likely it can be blamed on some gimp DD without snipers and/or a bad SJ choice. Notice the stress of the lack of snipers past 60 ( Which I'm seeing alot of ) , you just don't level past 60 without snipers people, it's more than fucking gimp, that person is dragging the party into 2-3k per hour and it's plain difficult to have fun like that with over 30k tnl.
 
Well when a poor guy spends lots of his real money buying gil, ofcourse hes gonna say gear>skill but lmao a great job can be done with average gear since in FFXi u need to either buy gil or do nothing but nm camping and farming 24/7 to get the uber gear and even then u cant :lol: .But its funny how some ppl keep reminding what they are wearing .... good for uO.o
 
I don't farm and I still make a decent amount of money from gardening. I've been growing elemental ore since I learned how like 7 months back. I now have usually 30 pots going at a time. Of course I have gotten money from friends that have quit, but I also make alot of money myself.
