Wow the flameboard is gay now. BTW, Gear > Skill.

I believe that skill > gear, but that's no reason to not keep yourself decently equiped. I've never had the money to buy uber gear until recently, but I have been skilled. Obviously I'd be a little better with uber gear, but I was still good without it.

Despite my lack of uber gear, I still owned Onzozo. My tanks didn't have to spam <Silena> or <Paralyna> when they got hit with blaster and chaotic eye. As soon as the coeurl used the move, the -na was on it's way. That's the kind of skill that good gear can't buy, so you're an idiot to say that gear completely replaces skill at ANY level. Obviously people get better as they get higher, but some people still suck at 70+.

I have never used my skill as a reason for not having uber gear, it's simply a lack of money. I farm, craft, garden, and do whatever I can to get money for gear. Of course I want the uber gear, but it wont make me a better place, just a more expensive one.

no being gimp does not mean having the +1 gear. it means having the right normal gear. have the up to date version, for example, if you are lvl 60, cant afford snipers, dont show up to a party wearing the lvl 36 str rings, buy the lvl 54 ones, even if they arent the hq its ok, they arent too expesive. you dont need plutos staff, but at least a drk staff to help reduce downtime.
and i have to wonder about people that cant make money in a video game. if youre under 18 its ok, i understand that, youre still sucking your moms tit for milk. but when i meet people in their 20's and 30's that cant scrape up 100 i have to wonder...
are you STILL sucking your moms tit?
its just basic hustle you should learn somewhere, watch boiler room or something, learn to put together a scheme and make some gil.

its easy, i make a mil a month by checking 4 mules in the morning, and thats it. i live the rest of the month with that money, do some synth work. make some money on some other synths. pretty easy, spend the rest of my time lvl'n or dying somewhere.

A blm can get away with having just dark and ice staves. Distortion is a very common burst. These are the ones you WANT to have of course. I myself dont have all the staves, but I'm getting there.

-Ham

I've seen a terrible rdm/nin with really good gear that still can't get it through his head how to play rdm. "You'll have to tell me if you need refresh because I'll be meleeing in this xp party with my /nin sub".

Yes, say no to gimps with great gear. It's almost a shame.

I try my hardest for good gear, but I certianly don't have the best for my level (Vermillion cloak.. hahahahaHAHAHA), but I've also been called one of the best RDMs in the game by almost every pt I've been in. You take that as you want.

And I think it's safe to say that most RDM 1-75 don't know how to play their job :P

Svina had a great example of a RDM with the BEST GEAR EVER.... for a Melee :P

Sure, don't gimp yourself and wear a level 30 something at level 50 (Unless its RSE and your a Galka Mage) but if you don't have +1 of EVERYTHING just know you aren't gimped, some people think you have all the time and money in the world to get stuff like that because they do

Try to get great gear, but if you end up with good, and your a skilled player, I don't see the problem.

I use my Aquilo's for general nuking now. I have the other HQs but I also use zenith mitts, so without the +elemental magic from my hands it makes a lot of sense to get it outa the staff.

I'll also point out I pretty much lvled with just ice staff and dark staff(though they costed 400k and 600k at the time) because I'd honestly never even heard of the other staves being better for other elements. I'm honestly not that convinced still. *shrug* Not on IT mobs with any decent resistance.

And on a side note, tisk tisk to the anti-gay topic name. Come on Vang it's the 21st century.

Ya fire, its pretty much garenteed that they work for smn or something, but as for blm its not that noticable... at least not for me lol

btw... Firestreak is my idol ^.^ Tarutaru Power!

Sweet lord I hope to one day upgrade from NQ Elemental staves to HQ

call me a gimp but i've said it before adn i'll say it again i'm not going to spend three months farming for teh best equipment. I will farm for good equipment and maybe one or two items here and there but i'll be damned if im gonna spend half my time playing this game just trying to get some damned gil to buy "better" equipment with. i play this game to have fun and that much farming is not fun to me.

and if you all want to sit back and think, you fucking gimp you suck at this game you can go right ahead cause if you're gonna take it that god damned seriously i dont want to play with your stupid ass anyway.

fun > equipment regardless of wether or not equipment > skill.

I never ever ever want to hear a WHM complain about the price of their gear ever again.

Ever.

Weapons? Light/Dark Staff. Hoop de god-damn doo. Barely 400k nowadays for the pair and they're endgame items.

Head/Body/Hands/Legs/Feet? AF all the way. Sure, you can maybe sub some Cure Clogs or a Vermillion here or there, but up until Errant gear (which is also cheap as fuck) you're golden with the free gear. Even if you get the expensive stuff, that's what, 5 million? The only exception would be Aristocrat's, and I've seen exactly 1 WHM with that.

Neck? Star Necklace - quested. And nobody's gonna bitch if you skip doing all those quests and take Holy Phial to endgame either.

Earrings? Aside from Morion/Phantoms, I don't remember +MP earrings going over 200k for a pair, even at 70+.

Back? A 20k Aurora Mantle is good enough until Blue Cape, and that's not much more expensive.

Waist? You can go 'expensive' here with your race stone/rope, but if not I suppose a 50k Hojutsu Belt would do.

Rings? Once again, even going 'expensive' here (e.g. Astrals) is still less than a million, and you have a perfectly viable alternative in 10k Electrums.

Cheap. As. Hell. But I know what you're going to say - 'ZOMG CUBS WAT ABOUT ERASE RAISE 2 RAISE 3 SOOOOOOOOOO EXPENSAV N U NEVAR GET TEH MONIES BACK"

Shut up.

If I remember right, Raise 2/3 + Erase is about the price of a Scorpion Harness. And yes, you can never sell back the scrolls. But when is a career melee going to sell back his Harness? Maybe if he gets an amazing piece of AF2 or Abjuration gear. Maybe. but discounting that, they're not going to be getting any gil back from that investment, either.

Not to mention that by the time a WHM needs Raise III, they have something like 4 new ENM battles that drop Raise III at absolutely NO RISK to them. No XP loss if you fail, just get to the mission, get the key item and off to the BC you go. Didn't get it? Go to the next battlefield. Didn't get it from any of them? BOO HOO, wait 5 days and try again.

Face facts - most melees spend more on gear between 40 and 60 than a WHM does on gear and spells all the way to endgame. And melees don't exactly have the benefit of 'gimping' themselves and still getting into half-decent XP parties.

I've been abridged by Mishaela. <3

You do know the massive difference is that no one needs Scorpion Harness but it's totally expected of us to have Raise II/III, and more than likely erase post-45-ish?

And you can't compare our bare minimum to your superb-maximum. You wanna throw out scorpion harness, fine, here's what mages can use to get that "extra kick" -
Penitant Rope, ~800k
Astral Rings, ~600k x2
Vermillion Cloak, ~3.4mil

Don't like Vermillion Cloak? Fine.
Noble's unic. ~8mil

Better? I don't care if you think WHMs complain too much about stuff or not, the fact is, all of our "better" equipment costs more or less the exact same, the only difference is, mages also hafto toss out a crapton of money for spells on top of equipment.

Just some highlights from my WHM

Apollo'sStaff= 1 mill
Penitent's Rope -800k
Sapient's Caoe 1.5 mill
Vermillion Cloak - 3.5 mill
Astral Rings = 400k each now?
Erase - 500k
Raise 2 = 170k
Raise 3 - fluxing price, 1 mill+ got in storage
Then a huge list of 20k+ scrolls you'll need. They do add up. Not to mention all the tele-scrolls.

The ENM BC battles are also not WHM exclusive. If they made the scroll so easy to attain, the price shall drop as a result. While it's still 1.4mill, whm can still complain. Afterall, if it's such easy money, why isn't the market flooded with them to the point the price plummets? (It may, hasn't quite yet).

And I don't even have the astral earring yet, and I've got about a 8 million gear investment I'd say.

Could a WHM get by with 400k? Skip erase, raise 2/3 and wear some decent cheap stuff, I think it could be done, and hella lotta whm do it.But lots of mnks too with nothing expensive. I rarely see a mnk with kotes til friggin lvl 60+.

Like I said tho... I could have all that gear and be a much worse WHM than someone without it who is simply more alert and puts more effort in. But I think that gear is a powerful statement of how serious I am at the job. Or uhh, I had a bunch of expensive stuff from other jobs and it fit right in?

Then let's compare maximum to maximum... with, oh, say, Monk vs. White Mage. I'll exclude drops that seem to never be on auction (Serket Ring, Accurate Earring, and the like) or insane +1s (Harness +1, Sniper's +1 etc.)

Weapons:

Cross-Counters (4.5M)
vs.
Light/Dark Staff (400k)

Head:

Emperor Hairpin (600k)
vs.
AF (0) or nothing (due to Cloak/Tunic)

Neck:

Peacock Charm (15M)
vs.
Holy Phial (50k) or Star Necklace (quested rare/ex)

Earrings:

Merman's Earrings (1M)
vs.
Death Earrings (240k)

Body:

Scorpion Harness (4.1M)
vs.
Noble's Tunic (8M)

Hands:

Ochiudo's Kote (800k) or Pallas's Bracelets (1.2M) or Alkyoneus's Bracelets (3M)
vs.
AF (0) or Errant Cuffs (17k)

Rings:

Sniper's Rings (1.1M)
vs.
Astral Ring (800k)

Back:

Amemit Mantle +1 (1.2M)
vs.
Blue Cape +1 (900k)

Waist:

Brown Belt/Life Belt (700k)
vs.
Penitent's Rope (800k)

Legs:

Master's Sitabaki +1 (300k)
vs.
AF (0) or Errant Slops (10k)

Feet:

Dune Boots (0, quested) or Rasetsu sune-ate (20k)
vs.
Cure Clogs (800k)

Shield:

None
vs.
Holy Shield (160k)

Let's also throw in Raise II (170k), Raise III (1.4M) and Erase (500k) on your side. We'll call your other spells a wash due to Monk food costing quite a bit more on our end (50k for 2 stacks of Sole Sushi vs. 20k for a stack of Melon Pie +1)

Adding it up...

Monk endgame costs: 31,520,000
White Mage endgame costs: 13,347,000

Throw out the PCC and it's still a nearly 3 million gil difference (5 million if you put Spectacles in that slot instead.) And yes, it is 'totally expected' for a melee to have most, if not all of that gear. When you're a 'fill in the gap' job as opposed to a 'we need this job or I'm not partying' job, you need to have the best to stand out.

Hold on, Harness is 5 Million now. Wouldn't want to be inaccurate. :D

I think you are shitting yourself if anybody is going to have PCC, ither then that those numbers look about right. Plus another mil ish for all the others spellsas well.

Errant Slops are 10k but I'd check the HQ version if I were you.

Blue Cape +1, eh? I've been using 1.5 mill Sapient Cape.
Int+2, Mnd+2, Enmity -2

Then if you really wanna max out, there's the 2 mill healing staff. And let's not forget the recent addition of the 1 mill cure clogs. When you throw away that PCC which you can't include without including Serkets, you'll fnid WHM to be very much on par in terms of high end expense.

Fair enough, let's add in what you've got.

Add 600k for the Sapient Cape (although upon further review, Errant Cape would be a better addition, so let's add 3.1 million instead.)
Take away 1 Astral and add 1 Serket (+3 million)
Add the Mahatma Slops (+790k)
And add 1.65 million for the Healing Staff. Cure Clogs are already in there.

While we're at it, let's add 900k for the proper Harness price. And if we're doing the +1 leg piece for WHM, let's do it for MNK as well (+1,980,000)

New WHM total: 21,887,000
New MNK total: 34,400,000

Still not really that close, is it? :D

Again, fair enough. But if you get HQ Nobles, we get HQ Scorp. Already added Serket.

WHM gets a 12 million gil boost from Aristocrat's, taking it up to 33,887,000.
MNK spends 7 million more for their +1, making their total 41,400,000.

If I don't HQ the Scorp, the totals are almost even. Almost.
