I found this over on BG and thought it was a good read. Quite a bit of it is already generally known, though there are a few good responses and opinions. I think the most pronounced similarity with my experiences were the responses from attempting to communicate without using the auto-translator.

Welcome to the trial run of
Talking Points
or
"Why every JP players wishes you were dead."

Ha, just kidding. There is some frank discussion contained within, which I think is good. Overall, I like how the experiment went.

To recap, I chose 10 questions from the previous thread. I tried to mix in some fun questions with the serious, to make it friendly as well as informative. Despite some (many?) criticisms of foreign players, there wasn't a single poster who criticized the survey itself, or thought communicating with us would be a bad idea. Also, they seemed receptive to hearing what we thought on some issues as well.

As for return questions, there were very few. There were actually more general requests for our opinions than actual questions posed, and I guess people just got caught up with all the questions they had to answer. I'm kind of relieved in a way, since this was a lot of work :)
Still, I saved what questions they did ask, and plan to go back and make a fresh thread to formally collect some more.

I hope you enjoy reading about what they think, and don't get too caught up by the cranky ones. I did make sure to defend against some of their criticisms, and after getting stuff off there chests through the survey, the vast majority were interested in compromise.

This was a lot of fun to do, and hopefully people reading will feel the same way.

Feel free to comment, copy/paste amusing responses here to discuss, and tell your friends if you think they would be interested.

Thanks to all the people who submitted questions, sorry if I didn't use yours D: and thanks to people who supported this experiment so far.

I wish I could stay around for the discussion, but it's like 4am. :(

Very, very good read and giving plenty of insight to how a variety of Japanese players think. I find it interesting that even they believe that MBs and SCs have gone to the wayside and need to be redone to be more useful, which is something I agree upon. I also find it truthful that if you just are more polite and actually speak in a somewhat understandable, true-English way, they might have a better chance at understanding what you say. Of course, there's also looking up simple, Romaji phrases to use online in various places.
All-in-all, I do like this.. nice find. ^-^

I like how like all of them wish SE never made mixed servers and had them segregated lol

ITS ULTRAMARINE!

Was an interesting read! Nice post. R8 Up!

It's fun how I aggree with JPs . Thats why I hate NA pts:

I don’t like foreigners. They <[ AFK ]>, they logout on a whim, and they don’t listen to battle advice.

There’s a difference in party structure and flow. Japanese like to go for 3 or more hours, while <[ NA ]> parties often break quickly.

Also:

Melees, please come to merit parties as sub-NIN, not sub-SAM. This is something I really want <[ NA ]> to understand. It makes me feel bad for <[ NA ]> healers. Using sub-NIN will make you super efficient. Your death-rate will go way down. Using Utsusemi will save your healers a lot of <[ MP ]>. Japanese don’t see <[ MP ]> as something that should be sacrificed to make you stronger.

Directed to our NA members in Einherjar that go drk/sam or sam/war and die 5 minutes In a chamber. You boost your own dmg but don't think about the overall success of the LS/meripo.

Was a nice read, truthfully I wish there was a way for us to communicate better.

The day service began for foreigners, Sarutabaruta was just littered with corpses. I would throw a Cure and say something nice, like, “You can do it!” and they would respond with foul language like <[ "You JAP?!" ]> or <[ fuck ]> or <[ monkey ]> and such. After that, I just stopped giving out Cures and sort of avoided foreigners. I always wanted to know why North American players would act it such a way. Honestly, people who study a little Japanese to speak with us are the most popular.

LMFAO! I fell on the floor laughing.....

You're acting like that's unique to NA players. I've seen way more JP's just drop party and log out at the drop of a hat than any other group.

The thing I found interesting was at the very end, that apparently they feel pressured to not say no without having a good reason.

Still skimming through this, but I was curious if anyone who's read this already knows what server this survey was taken from?

Believe it was JPs from multiple servers.

It's kept anonymous.

The anonymous nature of their BBS precludes me from posting any of their names or servers — I simply don’t know any of them! They say this is a strict rule so that people will react based on post content, rather than what handle posted it. It’s like Martin Luther King’s dream come to life. This is probably why they never mention any names, especially in the first question, and simply answer yes or no, with a little explanation.

I haven’t heard of any infamous foreigners, but I know this guy who is well-known for always dancing around in a subligar.

This one caught my eye in particular. <_<; >_>;

ITS ULTRAMARINE!
It really is! I had never even heard of that color before, but here it is...

Yeah, I laughed, too.

A lot of the analysis is pretty right on. Many NA players treat eachother like crap; why would they treat another culture differently? epeen is a much bigger deal with NA than it is with JP. Your group is only as strong as its weakest link, though...

Very good read. Thanks.

I like when <[ NA ]> try to chat a little in Japanese, but I think the vast majority only use English. They can also be very self-centered, and I don’t like that

This is some downright irony.

They do know how hard it is to learn Japanese in America, right? It's not exactly a common option in schools, we have to put our own extra time and money into learning it.

If possible, they should make it so you can choose between, Japanese, mixed, and US/EU servers!

Oh pshaw, as if us refined EU players would want to get lumped together with you people :P

.

"Time for work!" *disbands*, is the famous 1-liner lol. No warning, no rep, just DISBAND. ~_~ They should make one of these surveys for the JP community to read lol From NA Players.

No, because all we'd hear about forever is "NA is racist" if it were made.
