Blmaf2 Vs ????

Not sure what you're saying. I just said that Morrigan is all you need for BLM since the entire set beats all other pieces available in the same slot :P Well, unless you get resisted a lot :wink:
Was commenting on how many people want Morrigans and how long it'll take someone to get Morrigans. If' you're new to endgame there's a chance you could spend a long time trying to get Morrigans before you actually get them.

I know where I need to be now. Thanks everyone for your answers so far, but I do have one more question.

AF2 Pants VS Jet

Hmmm?

None of the above.

Mahatma Slops FT.

AF2 Pants VS Jet

Hmmm?
I honestly don't know why people use Jet Seraweels. They suck.

Jet Seraweels
[Legs] All Races
DEF:34 MP+15 INT+7 MND+7 Enmity-4
LV 72 WHM BLM RDM PLD DRK SMN BLU

Mahatma Slops
[Legs] All Races
DEF:39 STR-6 DEX-6 VIT-6 AGI-6 INT+8 MND+8 CHR+8 Enmity-4
LV 72 WHM BLM RDM BRD SMN BLU PUP

Mahatma Slops have 1 more INT, MND. Jet Seraweels have -6STR, DEX and VIT. However, do you actually melee as a mage? no? then what do you need them for? The only thing that "hurts" the Mahatma Slops is the 15 less MP, but 15 MP is barely enough for 1/10th of a tier 4 spell as BLM. There's also the -6 VIT, but you shouldn't pull hate as a mage anyway. And if you pull hate, the 6 VIT won't make much of a difference. Besides, any smart BLM, WHM and RDM have a "panic-set" consisting of DEF, VIT and -physical/magical/damage taken, that you can easily switch in at that point.

So yes, screw Jet Seraweels.

As for Mahatma Slops versus BLMAFv2, the bad lazy BLMes use BLMAFv2 all the time. Note: the sucky BLMes. Mahatma Slops outdamage AF2 legs in all situations except during same-day bonus.

LOL, looks like I need some new gear. I would definately get some use out of this. :)

Just to add to this, the same-day bonus on the AF2 doesn't even kick in all the time. Use Mahatma whenever you can, and hope that the bonus kicks in when you use AF2 on the same day.

I am under the impression that AF2 bonus of 5% for legs is always in effect for the spell that corresponds to the day. Maybe you are already reaching the MAB+% cap and thus not seeing a further increase in which case errant/mahatma would be better.

Yigit set should still be the best set for HMP if nothing has changed, unless you consistantly macro in AF+1 during the tick and macro back to Yigit.

AF2 feet are not as useless as others suggests. Stacking conserve mp+ is quite nice for continuing chain and lower number fights.

Yeah, its my understanding that the AF2 legs give a set +4 (or if its 5) MAB, on top of the occasional +10 MAB from day bonus.

Either way, I'm not sure if Shadow Trews would outdamage Mahatma, but they are +4 Magic Attack Bonus (+5 for H.Q). If they do outdamage Mahatma, its a very vlose battle. Perhaps only a difference of a few points of damage, so you might as well stick to Mahatma.

And yeah, DEF/VIT/Physical damage reduction gear really helps for WHM, BLM and RDM for the occasions you do pull hate. Definitively something I'd recommend all mages to get to increase their survivability :p I'd love to get my dirty hands on a Defending Ring, but yeah... I don't do HNM's, and I doubt a mage would get it over a PLD anyway :p

From what I've seen so far, most equipment is a "Depends on situation." type thing.

You're absolutely correct. Different gear sets for BLM is a must to maximize your effectiveness with nukes, enfeebles, dark magic, and even buffs to help you stay alive when you've pulled hate off the tank. As a good BLM, you also need a solid understanding of elemental magic vs. intelligence vs. magic attack bonus and how to gear appropriately for each or a combination.

Having fun is awesome. What is more fun than casting Thunder IV on a pudding for 2300+ damage?

PS: Don't forget about pieces for fast cast. Fast cast can be uber helpful.

The fact that there are no concrete numbers proving it's effectiveness plus the loss of damage, make me not want to switch them in.

I don't think this is possible. :D

If you wear the sea obi on doubleweather and right day, the obi caps itself, and mahatma slops (or morrigans >_>) become better than the af2. Also even though the effect is the same as MAB, it's not actually mab, so the day/weather boosts have their own cap.

At least that's what the wiki says, could all be wrong.

Most I've been able to do is just shy of 2000 on a pudding. I guess with the extra 5 int merits, morrigan body/slops (maybe full set?), and a brd to help your dmg, You might break 2100, but 2300 is just pushing it =P

One interesting gear set I use on blm is for mnd. I don't see many blms who use a load of mnd, but it's great for stoneskin, also instead of an "oshit" macro, a macro you have one whenever not nuking is better. Mine equips the cheviot cape, terra staff, novia, etc...

With this setup I've noticed a clear difference in my ability to take dmg, my stoneskin lasts for a significant amount of dmg, and after it's down I'm not a paper doll, and can actually take a few hits from even the stronger hitting stuff in the game. In situations where it's ok to kite around a monster you have hate on, being able to take dmg while the monster is in range, and before you run out of range can be vital.

Ya, as I mentioned, a "Defensive" macro for mages is great to switch in for when you take hate etc.

The problem with BLM is that it has a ton of situational gear that clutters things up more than most jobs. It's impossible to be the best at everything given that in order to do that, you need more gear than you can carry. There are some lesser used sets that although some people use, the majority do not realize the importance or use of them. Take a Dark Magic set, most BLMs (RDMs included) only use them for Drain and Aspir. From my personal experience, I don't think many realize that the potency of Bio DoT is based on Dark Magic skill and according to Wiki, 291 will net you the highest DPS (although it's I doubt that's the max cap given you can get much higher). A full INT set can with 150+ INT can get max DoT on elemental enfeebles, but getting there for any race besides taru is very difficult/expensive. It's little things like these that'll set a great BLM apart from the average BLMs, but at the same time, the only people that really notice those things are the really good BLMs.

Then there are the more obvious necessities. Resting sets, nuking sets, staff sets, day/weather macro sets, enfeebling, etc. Getting the most out of all sets is very difficult and a majority of BLMs barely scratch the surface. I myself lack many the various pieces and mostly have the bare minimum; the nuking set, enfeebling set and resting set although none of the yigit. If you plan on being a great BLM, prepare to spend a long time working on gear. If you just want great damage, most of the items necessary are on AH with only a few exceptions.

Lastly, listen to the people who already posted on exact gear choices. The only thing I would like to hear is actual stats added when mentioning pieces at least for easier comparison, but maybe that's just because I don't have access to them at the moment. >.>

I don't think thats with INT merits (maybe 1), but of course the Obi bonuses/AF2/Ugga.

I have seen my husband break 2400 with a Burst II on Thunderday. He also had a spirit lantern up in addition to some of the other things we've discussed like obis and pants. ^^

He may have a screenshot of it. I'll ask.

Part of being a good BLM is knowing when to use said sets, too. As an example, you won't need to cast Elemental DoT's and Bio II in Dynamis, although you might still want to bring your Dark Magic set for things like Stun, Drain and Aspir.

And yes, Dark Magic skill, Magic Accuracy and Jupiter's Staff DO increase the duration Stun lasts, and not only the "Resist!" rate, since Stun, like most other magic spells, have partial resists.

hmm yeah Mnd is need for BLM to have stoneskin. I tink for a tarutaru blm , u need a total of 114 MnD which will give u a defense of 350HP. And from what the above thread fail to mention beside a few blm, if u wan a good and easy to get body, try NQ weskit. It is good and only few other bodies can out DD it. The best of all... it look extremely nice on tarutaru but suxs on galka. Apology to all galka out there.

Alright, I got coaxed into making a post. ^^ but here are some of my opinions about this subject. Please keep in mind these are just my views and I am waiting to watch this turn into another Pudding E-Peen contest in the very near future.

HNM

Your basic goals for HNMs in my opinion should be 320 Elemental magic / 140 INT to ensure decent dmg and minimal resists. You can make up for lacking in either with the correct support jobs (i.e. BRDs for INT, CORs for Magic Acc)

AF2 vs. Others

Pants = Win!
With a bonus that is active on the corresponding element, the bonus is amazing. Basically, even casting Stone on Earthday for the same damage as an unmerited Fire or Wind for a lot less MP make them the obvious winner.

The rest are all situational imo.
Hands = DRK magic macro
Body = Running around refresh
Feet = Good solo piece
Head = Pushing up Ele for HNMs (substituted with Elite easily)
Belt = Gimme!

Mahatma vs Jet

This is a preference call for me. Basically it boils down to +1INT/MND vs 15 MP and no negative stats. At end-game, the loss of 1 INT < +15 MP and no negative effects for me. The +MND does help your Stoneskin, but if you have an enhancing torque and a decent MND set your stoneskin (Water Staff > Earth Staff here) should be maxed at 350 already. P.S. if /RDM, dont forget to put that enhancing gear on for Phlanax ^^

Pudding Damage

Dave, I am pretty sure I have seen you do more than that but would have to look up the parses. These are also pre 5/5 INT for me, but with max ele, pot, and AMII. I will have to go back and try to break that magical 2.5k soon.^^

The information below is with optimal setup for me (Thundersday, Obi, HQ Staff, Uggy, Spirit Lantern, Burn, and unfortunately no HQ weskit/Hands/Novio). Also, I included the full relative portion of the screenshot, so any manipulation could be easily noticed and found.

I was talking about thunderIV =P thats what your original post said. My own records are
