you ignored my asside :p which is that those are realistic numbers against flies '-'. <3 darters and skimmers.

Less MP, food and ammunition used Used = more chains!
and less gil wasted ^^b

Villarel, stop ignoring what people post please, it is rude and causes you to make uninformed posts which makes you look like a fool. I am sorry if your evade stinks, or if you forget to put up utsusemi each time you pull, but the only time i personally ever got hit in valley or onzozo was if the pull was exceptionally long, or if i wanted to level my evade so i didn't refresh utsusemi. It is not as if Phraust (faust? '-' he isn't a doll nm >< he is a hume thf) nor i have not leveled on Torama and Raptors before, and our experiences and just as valid as yours. The benefit of pulling with a ranged weapon is that you can pull from a distance, as phraust pointed out. If you are sure to do that often times the monster will not have the opportunity to even swing at you before you reach camp.

You ma'am are the rude and crass one. I'll save you the trouble of rereading my post and itterate it here.

Some situations require the Tank to provoke first. On fast moving mob, your ranger/puller will lose all his shadows. When your ranger/puller is coming back with zero shadows is then not better to provoke first. I've seen it happen to many pullers (as a tank, a puller, and as mage.

You, Nasya, however, don't want to accept that this happens. An resort to derogatory and demeaning post.

Excellent post I loved it, nothing to comment on about the original post.

Someone did mention thief for pulling though. The reason we evade a good number of attacks from inc tough pulls isn't just a matter of our highest evade in the game(A+), it comes from our 3 evasion traits as well which adds a very large buffer to our already awsome evasion.

I was a little low at 60 when I had to pull torama, and if they took a swing I evaded 25% excluding shadows and only 199/203 evasion. Not to mention the only evasion equip I had was the +10 from hairpin. If I wanted I could get nomad's mantle(+3), scentless armlet?(+5), 2 dodge earrings(+3 each), and survival belt(+5), as well as some other evasion equipment I don't see a need for.

So thieves, lets give ourselves a big pat on the back for our most outstanding evasion. /hurray

It does happen, if you are a shitty puller, but if you are careful of how you go about pulling, it won't. Yes, raptors and torama are fast moving, and they attack fast too, but if you pull with a good distance and a fresh set of blinks it is not a problem. Why do I say this? Because I spent the majority of my time in The Valley of Sorrows and The Labyrinth of Onzozo pulling myself. This is what Phraust and I have said on many occasions, and this is what you seem to be neglecting and not reading. What I say comes from personal experience, yet you disregard it. This is what is rude, and uninformed about your posts.

What did I ask you to do(the word please implies a request)? Simply, not to assume that just because you have had problems with your pullers (or when you pull as ranger) in the past that it is not possible to consistently pull without losing blink even against the Torama and Raptors you are using as examples. Phraust and i both have said that we personally have been able to pull, and have been in pts where rangers have pulled these monsters without a problem.

I am not denying that this can be a problem... What i am saying is that the issue you are describing, that would justify the tank to voke before tasa, is one that is easily avoided . Yes it can happen, but if it is happening consistently there is a problem with the puller, not with the concept of waiting for a thf to attack the tank when the monsters back is to him. Like outlined previously a good thf and a good tank and a good puller can do the whole set up with no delay... it’s as easy as having TASA activated during the pull and pressing F8 (or a /target <bt> macro) and pressing attack.

Finally:

Rude:
Lacking the graces and refinement of civilized life; uncouth.
Lacking education or knowledge; unlearned.
Ill-mannered; discourteous: rude behavior.

Crass:
So crude and unrefined as to be lacking in discrimination and sensibility.

Neither of these definitions, which by context are the ones you certainly intended when using these words, apply. I have read through your posts in their entirety, taken them into account, and decided to reply because the absolute nature of your opinions when I compare what they claim to my experience, and the experiences listed by others in this thread, are incorrect in that they leave no room for discrepancies. I was not attacking you as a person, which would indeed be rude. Rather I was suggesting that you should consider the entire content and context of someone’s post before telling them they are wrong, so that you could make an educated reply. Someone who is wise realizes that no matter how vast their experience, others will have valid experiences that might contradict their own.

If Phraust or I or anyone else says that they have personally been able to pull without problems, even in the Valley or LOO, rather then saying "your comments are invalid i know all" which is certainly how you have been coming off in this thread, you could have said something along the lines of "in my experience it was often better to voke first because this is usually a problem in the parties I have had", thus suggesting why it would be valid to voke first, which is your argument, without discrediting what others had said in the past, which indeed is uncouth and insulting.

There is certain information about the others who are posting in this thread that must be taken into consideration when you reply to them. Furthermore, when you looked at those facts, you should have realized that those posters are accounted with many of the same situations you are describing to make your argument. At the start of this thread Phraust described how it is important to know your skill chains and monsters weaknesses, and he used Torama as the example monster. This means he has probably fought them on more then one occasion. Later he said that he was giving numbers from his attacks on procs, which would validate the prior assumption. What does this mean? He has been through Valley of Sorrows and Labrinth of Onzozo already.

Information about me is much easier to take into consideration when replying to me. You and I have run into each other many times recently, and I have my levels posted in my signature. I dare say we even leveled with each other a few times in VoS and LoO when you were playing your BLM. Perhaps you forgot about that though. Either way, what this means about Phraust and myself is that when we say we didn't have problems when pulling x or y mob in the locations you are describing is that we are in fact qualified to say that. Ergo our accounts are valid, just as yours are.

There are situations when it is best to voke first for sure, but it is necessary to be able to distinguish when that is the case. Discrimination when being a tank or party leader is certainly important, if your members are not fast enough at setting up the SC or the TASA or get owned while pulling of course it is best to voke first. In contrast if the party is organized, the THF and tank are fast to line up, and the Puller is able to pull without losing his shadows, which I will stress again is possible against any monster, including those you listed as problematic , than a sensible person would realize that they could afford not to voke at the start of the fight, which would make the entire party more effective. Your comments left no room for the second scenario, and that is why you received a negative response to your post from me, as the second had been described multiple times, and you had seemingly ignored it.

Thanks for the personal attack though Vill, I am curious to know when you became so spiteful towards me... send me a pm or something about it, because I honestly do not know what I did to cross you. Unlike the previous post I made to in reply to yours, this one was demeaning, though in a far more subtle and less direct way then your last post towards me was. The first, however, was simply a request and suggestion... perhaps you do not do this but I let those I know and care about, or respect, know when they have made a mistake. I am very willing to accept that "this happens", I never denied that it can, what I refuse to accept is that it will always happen, and that it cannot be corrected, which is what you seemed to suggest.

lol... yeah... well, as unfortunate as it is that this thread will likely turn into that, it is in the flame board so it had to happen sometime ><

Nasya,

Did I say that you were wrong. I offered my view on this topic. You may disagree, sure. Points and counter points were exchanged in a constructive way.

You started with the adhominum attacks, that was rude of you.

First off id like to say Hello! This is my first post! ^_^ 2nd id like to praise Phraust for this awesome post. Even though i am only a lvl 34 thf, i have already experienced things along these lines. I know that the EXTREME SC's are out of my league at this moment, however some people take thieves for granted even at my level and im shocked to see how its hard for us to get parties. They also have no clue how to set up SATA and i agree with you wholheartedly! O and i did read your post from top to bottom :)

Phoku, soon as you get to 30 you automatically have a say in this post!

Cong on your first post, I hope you enjoy this forum and don't let the jackasses in the flame board mess with your mind.

That said.... PHRAUST FOR PRES :)

From my experience as playing both thf (lvl69) and pld (lvl62) pulling is quite an intricate process when attempting to pull Raptors, Manticores, Toramas, etc. No matter where I stand in distance to pull with full shadows up or not I would still get my ass chopped off either way. I agree that you are not fully utilizing the SATA abilities for thf but at what cost for the puller (Mainly referring to a ranger puller).

Now from playing from a PLD point of view I feel its necessary to prevent such a problem from happening where the puller comes back from pulling while he/she is now at orange HP. What I usually do now, this has worked for every ranger and thf PT I have been in was the ranger would come back from pulling while the THF readies his SATA. I would just cast a simple Flash to temporarily pull the hate off the ranger for enough time to get full heals on him/her without the whm pulling hate off. Most times it would just take a simple shot of ammo from the ranger to quickly pull the hate back hence allowing the thf to quickly execute his/her SATA. I'm sure you would all rather just SATA off the bat, but to me this has always been the safest way to go since I always have concern for any members in my PT close to death.

Sorry for the long ramble

Err sorry (or bad grammar  )if i offend you but this is my opinion. When high lvl (65?-75), i think tanker should voke 1st no matter what. And there is a time that initial SATA (on tank) is necessary.

1st case - THF and RNG
THF us consider the evasion of thf and rng. A+ for thf, and E for RNG (lol). If you want to let RNG with no voke (sj nin) to setup SATA, that will be hard because mages can get hate even with small enfeebling magic. Even the RNG have full shadow before pull, it is a problem to let RNG/NIN to tank it for a while just for initial SATA. If you think RNG can recast blink, that will be a problem. Every RNG will try to pull at the long range between RNG and enemy. Please don't compare the evasion of THF and RNG. What i mean is RNG's shadow gone really fast if he is being attacked. And only RNG74-75 can have Utsu2.

2nd case - THF and other melee with voke (take WAR/NIN for example)

Ok, this is easy to setup SATA on tanker. But one thing for sure, WAR has to wait SATA recast to start SC'ing (if you think your SATA @20-30 is not long, you are completely wrong). IMO, this is kinda bad (especially if you have BLM in PT). The reason is the pt need to wait for SATA recast and at the same time, enemy's HP can get below 50% (support DD hit hard, like 70-150 per hit). If they start SC, that will be overkill (I mean MB overkill or no MB at all).

I know I don't have uber eq like you guys do. I am BLM75 and kinda pissed off just to wait SATA recast. Sometimes I can't MB after sc because enemy die after SC (FYI, i never nuke before sc start, just heal tanker or melee because i don't like overkill MB). Ok, this is the best example i can give you for what i usually do when i play BLM.

100%HP (Enemy's HP)
70% HP = SC start
20-30%HP = SC start at SC & MB end

In addition, I like SC start early (not to wait SATA recast of course). So when SC and MB end, I can let DD (damage dealer) to get TP so they can SC early for next battle. Unless it is chain 4 or 5, of course I'll nuke to death lol.

I am also WAR75 and I am usually get 150-180% TP (DRG also get same TP rate with WAR) before THF get his/her SATA up and 100%TP (I am wearing hauberk and usual acc items, this doesn't change even I change my leg part to byakko haidate). I hit like 80-120 damage per hit by using axe. So, if i want to wait SATA recast (for example, THF does initial SATA), I (or BLM who nuke before SC) will do damage and make enemy's hp below 50%. And when WAR and THF do SC, BLM can't MB (or overkill MB) and it will be a waste. I know some THF like his WS damage but if you consider damage over time, many jobs can do more damage than THF. Up to you guys (THF) if you want to do initial SATA, but just consider other jobs in PT because sometimes they have to wait for your SATA recast just to do SC. Even the recast time is short, people need to do SC asap (especially when there is BLM in PT).

Tanker at high level job doesn't really depend on SATA THF to get hate. PLD no need if he keeps his Flash or whatever job ability to get hate). NIN has no problem to get hate if s/he do all enfeebling ninjutsu. I play with Halflife when I am WHM70 and she is NIN71. Even without initial SATA, the support DD (WAR or DRG) has a problem to get hate from her when SC time. (When I am WAR, I usually change all gear to AF gear because it has a lot of Enmity, so I can even get hate from PLD lol even normal voke when SC time with THF.)

Sorry again if I offend some of you guys with this post.

hehe well i do have a say somewhat but assasin doesnt affect me yet so i dont know quite how to use it effeciently (sp) yet. But like its been said this whole post, everything phraust said was true. I had another experience today where the tanks kept circling the mob so i kept missing the crawlers. GAH WTF! Everyone must read this or die!!

I'm not offended Arcien, but I think that there is an easy solution at least to the problem you suggested with waiting for recast for WS ^^; (btw, you have to put your character name in your sig since it is not your user name '-') If a thf uses TASA when the pull is happening by the time the mob reaches the pt it will only have 15 seconds or so left on recast. Also, when both melees are ready for SC of course no one would do a TASA without WS to start of the fight '-'.

Also, the solution hazell offered was wonderful i think. Simply cast flash, or for ninja's slow and blind, and then the rng or other melee can reclaim hate after having been cured ^^;. THe fact is if you do not want us to TASA without WS then what is the point of having a thief in pt? As you said our damage is laughable when compaired to other jobs... the only thing that sets us appart from melee with /thf is that those skills are useful by themselves. Take away our ability to use them to our fullest and you take away the entire point of our job '-'

Well, I agree with Arcien's idea.
It is rather unnecessary to start a battle with SATA.
Let the tankers tank and the DD dmg :)
Save SATA to unleash a greater damage while performing WS;
As a DRG, the only thf who manage to keep up TP with me is Dirtybird... *not anymore as I SJ SAM and gain 60% TP extra muahahaa* We never do initial SATA and it turns out great. SATA will always be ready for WS and when we perform SC, we get the best out of the MB and also SC effect [higher dmg]

If you do initial SATA, ppl like me will have to wait for SATA to be ready and only then we will only do SC which IMO is inefficient. Time is require/ wasted while waiting for SATA and it is a waste of TP to do SC by the time it is ready as the mob might have 40%-50% left of health. Doing end-SC without SATA will not get the best out of the SC effect and MB which i think is also inefficient, not effective.

Sorry for the horrible grammar, i'm tired and blur from work. Adios

I think you missed the biggest part of this particular discussion, which was Using the Skillchain at start.

Using your skillchain at start does 3 things:

1) It puts a lot of Hate on the Tank.
2) It enables Full Damage at the start when you have a lot of HP/MP.
3) leaves the Rest of the Fight to ensure a control on the TP flow.

1) If your Skillchain Partner is using thier Weapon skill in the middle or as you said at 30% health, there is a pretty god chance you either are having the Paladin weaken or 'let go' of hate, as to turn the mob, or you are skillchaining off the very person you are skillchaining with, which not only weakens the hate towards the Tank, but places a lot of hate on your lighter armored skillchain partner.

2) When you Skillchain at the start you are garunteed, if your group is good, a couple of things: Full Hate from Thief's Damage, and Skillchain on Tank, Everyone Can Magic Burst thus attaining the Magic Burst Bonus, no recast timers, and a blanck Hate table. What I see a lot in fights that are settup like what you are suggesting is the group using the Skillchain at about 30% health and end up Doing the Skillchain, and getting a Magic Burst off, where the magic burst goes off when the Mob has a hair of health. Example: if MonsterA has 6000 HP and your Skillchain Does 2500 with a busrt, you are throwing away 500 damage you could have used mor efficiently. With a standard SATA+WS settup, you always Know what you are going to get, and where all the Damage is going. It' like Dropping A Bomb on a city towards the end of the war, vs. dropping it at the beginning to maximize damage and clearing out the survivers after.
(Man that sounded Grim... sorry)

3) If you do Your Skillchain in the Beginning, you can coordinate with your group better to ensure that the Skillchain partners can attain enough TP during the fight. If for instance you Skillchain+Burst, and the Mob has only 25% health left, the Blm can ease off and Heal MP while the Skillchain Partners gain TP for the Next fight.

It's about Chain Stability, as well as Hate Control, and takes no time to settup and solves Way more problems than it Creates.

To end, I leave you with a riddle:

What did the group do before Assassin?

Miss typo at my last post

100%HP (Enemy's HP)
70% HP = SC start
20-30%HP = SC & MB end

hmm i think u kinda misunderstand phraust. me and kira never suggest do SC at middle of battle (thats bad idea). of course we like to start SC early as possible. what kira was suggesting that you have to consider with thf that do initial sata that do not have 100%tp yet (of course you cant do sc at start, right?). then support DD has to wait sata recast (because of initial sata) just to sc with thf (of course they have to wait thf sata to do ws, there is no way pt will let thf do shark bite w/o sata recast up).

if you have 100%tp before battle, thats not a problem to do sc at start (thats is common thing to do unless you dont know about that).

you have missed what we have been suggesting though, which is that rather then wait for thte monster to be at the PT to activate TASA, that the thf should activate it when the pull is announced, or, if they are pulling, before they shoot their arrow/throw their boomerang. If they do that, they will have TASA back before 15 seconds into the actual fight. Let me give example...

RNG goes to look for monster...

(RNG) <t> {found it!} TP: <tp> <call14>
<thf> uses Trick attack
<thf> Uses Sneak Attack
::everyone waits a bit for rng to get back with mob::
::rng runs past tank, who lines up and engages, thf engages right behind him::
<thf> hits <bt> for 400 dmg!
(tank) {Provoke} <t> TP: <tp>
(THF) Recast on TASA is @20(usually closer to 15) seconds

that is not an unreasonable time... espeacially when you consider that if you look at job menu, and it says that TASA has 5 seconds left, you can hit your macro and it will reactivate them right away.

the other situation, where thf is a puller would go like this...

(THF) <t> {found it!} TP: <tp> <call14>
<thf> uses Trick attack
<thf> Uses Sneak Attack
<thf> /ra <t>
::thf runs to camp, secondary voker takes claim, tank lines up::
<thf> hits the <bt> for 400 damage!
(THF) Recast on TASA is @20(usually closer to 15) seconds

provided that the thf arms TASA before the mob gets to camp, waiting on the recast should not be a problem.

Well, Arcien and I do understand the your point in this discussion. However, we do not agree with initial SATA (When your TP ain't up for a SC at the beginning)
From what you have shown seems rather a great SATA plan however, how long can you do you think this will last in an exp pt? Life isn't just a straight boring road so as for this game. This is rather bumpy and really unpredictable and I am sure at times your SATA ain't ready for pull, are you going to wait for SATA to be ready???
As you are very well informed, RNG suck at evasion. Why do you even think about letting the RNG tank a little bit while thf prepare for SATA and actually hit the mob.
And at times; DD TP: 100%+; Thf 90% before next fight commence. For Example.
DD>> <Ready To Start Skillchain>
THF at TP: 95% goes hunting
THF prepares Trick Attack.
THF prepares Sneak Attack.
Pulls. PT set in SATA position
THF does Critical DMG on loser.
Thf>> TP: 100%; Sneak Attack X Trick Attack X
DD>> <Ready to Start Skillchain!>
Thf>> SATA not ready. Wait..
In DD's mind esp mine, "Bah, why do i even bother saying...."

Second example, Same case but funny mobs, and you might tend to collect TP before actually hitting the mob *Yes, I experienced this before*
I provoke at the beginning, Thf goes behind and attempts to hit but miss. Bark Tarantula readies Sickle Slash *Muahaha die you mofo!* Critical DMG, 1000DMG and dies...
In order to avoid such funny and sad cases, isn't it better to let the tankers provoke and do anything to gain hate at the beginning WITHOUT depending SATA/TASA; Skills such as ninjitsu's jubaku, kurayami, hojo, and PLD's flash, Cure... Those skills are there for some reasons and to the eyes of tankers TO GAIN HATE. So why bother doing SATA at the beginning when your TP ain't ready? So that the ninja's don't waste money in order to gain hate or maybe save 1 shihei? Save PLD's MP? To gain that little extra dmg from thf?
And if you plan to perform SC with SATA, think again. Dagger WS are weak *polearm too* SATA gives you the upper hand as in more dmg.
Well, I am not here to hurt thfs but only to voice my opinion about initial SATA without TP 100% or more. Reconsider possible events that might occur. We are not fortune tellers *well i know i am not* but isn't it better to let Tankers tank and the DD do what they are suppose to do which is to dmg the mofo?
