Lyndis: the after-action report

[quote="Aerdrie"It amazes me you got this far Oh wait if it were not the fact that rdm is a high demand job your ass would sit in jeuno all day shouting
[/quote]

And that right there is why I have no respect for so many high lvl mages.

ok Cubswoo I have to say in general you know a fairly good chunk about this game, so in most cases I tend to agree with your opinion as its pretty much based on fact.

I also agree that Rdm/Drk is a strange set up, and I personally dont really see what Dark gives to the Rdm job.

I also feel that if you can afford it you should try and equip you character with the best possible gear (unless extreme prices) and if you can't then go farming.

These are all true statements. ^^

However I partied with Lyndis as his rdm from around lvl 30 through to 52.

Through all those levels I never had a problem with Lyndis ( mainly used /nin but sometimes /drk). Lyndis also knew when to cast spells, always had refresh running on himself and our 2 blms and in general performed well as a rdm.

I see where you're coming from with Lyndis, really, I do. But ask yourself - was she sticking all the proper enfeebles? Was she quick on the Dispel, or was there a 5-10 second lag time? (I don't know about this myself, since the Spiders we fought didn't need Dispel.) Was she bursting the skillchains, keeping whichever melees hasted that were her responsibility, making sure there was no wasted MP with overlaps, etc?

I've seen some excellent RDMs in my day, and I have just as high a standard of any other party member as I do myself. (and it doesn't take a lot to have more than a -2 INT boost.)

I for one an happy to join a party with Lyndis as I know he has the right attitude towards the game.

I have to disagree. Her subjob choice lends a 'well, I don't fucking care what's best for the other 5 members of this party, I'm going to melee and you just have to live with it if you want Refresh."

Who knows maybe one day he will experiment with a /blm or /whm (wink) but until that day happens its not going to stop me lvling with him.

Is this because you truly feel Lyndis is the best RDM for the job, or is it because your parties need Refresh and Dispel and the rest is just gravy?

Hypothetical - 2 RDMs seeking, Lyndis with DRK sub and another Hume, same level, with a BLM sub that uses a wand and has substantial +INT, +MND and +MP bonuses, far above what Lyndis brings. Do you choose Lyndis, or the RDM/BLM? Be honest.

I'll let you in on a little secret. I hate XPing. Everything I want to do in this game (high rank missions, Zilart, Sea, HNMs, Gods, the whole enchilada.) But to get there, I need to party, build XP, skill up, do all that first. It's a means to an end. And I want it over as fast as possible. That makes my standard for XP/hour much higher than the average player.

The WHM in the Lyndis party thanked us for a 'great party' at the end. We had barely crested 2k/hr. It was a waste of time and gil for me, and a 'great party' for him. Different strokes for different folks.

I have more issues with people, such as a lvl 28 blm in my party the other, who was xping with fishing gear, a Bastok ring, and a + dex ring on.

This really isn't a defense. "Well, I get a D in Economics, but Billy over there got an F - shouldn't you be more worried about him?" Maybe, but that D you got is still pretty pathetic and is gonna require a lot of improvement.

<3 Lyndis.
/sigh everyone else.

its a game.lyn has fun doing what he does so i support that because he is my friend.

i dont claim to know everything about rdm bc i have never played the job, but lyn is a good player, so i dont give a shit. people get so high and mighty when someone colors outside the lines its pathetic.

its not illegal for someone to be different, its actually rather refreshing, instead of people spitting out the same thing over and over again. you may have your arguments about how things should be and how perfect you want you party so that it is best for you, but get over it. you obviously arent going to change his opinion so stop whining about it.

yeesh.

Only time I ever ran into lyndis (if i remember correctly) was when I was helping a friend do G3 and we all got killed :( I asked her for raise and she was kind, polite, and helpful.

From what I have seen it would seem that cubswoo knows his shit though.

Just to throw my opinion on rdms out there, these are my feelings...

1) Refresh = pld, whm, self, blm, whoever, whatever - just refresh the pld and whm please. Manage pt mp, it's your job.

2) Dispel buffs / debuff the mob. Also, If you see (Dispel) (Please) in the /p log just do it. Don't say 'I know' because that shit has probably been going on for ten minutes and you haven't noticed.

3) Melee if you want, but don't forget dispel and refresh.

4) Your tp is virtually useless - please just rest in between fights.

5) Stay the fuck away from the skillchain unless you are mb'ing it.

Refresh, dispel, do whatever else you want. If you are a rdm you are invited to a pt to manage mp and help the whole pt gain xp. The job is 'Red Mage' not 'Red Warrior', cast first, melee second please, pay attention to your job.

I must comment on this as well...

You know what else does 200 damage a fight?

Tachi: Jinpu, Yukikaze, Gekko, or Kasha

at my level, though, 300% tp Tachi: Enpi and thats if i'm lucky

Yeah, having fun is good and that's what this game is all about. So if you want to sub /drk and fool around that's fine. Just stay away from me and anyone else that wants to move at the standard rate. If you're happy with 2k/hour, find 5 other people that will accept that rate and have fun.

I generally don't like meleeing red mages. However, when the rdm in my party pulls out his/her sword and starts swinging away I'll just laugh at them over LS chat and go about my own duties. I'll only ask them to stop if they're not doing their duties as a red mage. Missing a refresh or two, or 1 late dispell is acceptable. Everyone has a bad round at times. But when the paladin never gets refresh and the white and black mages only get it once every 5 minutes, something's up. I hear "We have a sword, why not use it?" a lot. As a blm I have a scythe that would probably do more damage per swing than your puny sword, but do I use it? Hell no.

Finally, I think RDM is just about the only job that would be snatched up no matter what sub they had. Not even Black Mages are taken with shit subs. Not even semi-acceptable subs like summoner. I had a friend that recently had to go back and level up whm because "I could't get any invites as blm/smn, apparently people don't like it a lot more than I thought." Mind you, he was post-50 and had the full benefits including auto-refresh.

People just want Refresh whores. That's all they see you as. You will be picked last and only out of desperation. Why do you think cookie cutter subs exist? Because that's all that works well. Not "works" but "works well." I'm sure you can do most or all of your mage duties with /drk, but I bet you can't do them well. Not as well as with a functional sub.

/em looks at his qcdn experience, looks around at everyone else's, gets off the soap box, and passes it along to the next poster.

As I said in opening, if you wanna slack off and have fun by doing your job sub-par you better find 5 other slackers that don't mind. From reading these posts, you already have 2 people that don't mind slow exp with you. Go party with them and please never invite me to any exp parties; rank, Zilart, or CoP missions; NM hunts; god fights; dynamis runs; or any other stuff that requires a bit of skill to accomplish. From what I keep hearing, you're on the road to being one of these "high level noobs" everyone bitches about.

What Uzor said is correct, but Applepie on ffxionline.com was one of the first to explain this best. In his experiments he showed that once the mob had below 20% health it immidiately uses ws when it has enough, however before it goes below 20% health it uses it at a random time once it has enough tp. So while giving the mob extra tp early on doesn't immidiately cause more ws, on average they will get used earlier because the mob is reaching 100% earlier and starts randomly using its ws. Dmg spells do give tp. Easy way to test this is go to valkurm and grab a lizard or something weak that will never hit you and gain tp. Cast stone on it over and over. Eventually it will use a ws from the tp gained from your nuke. This is easiest to see if you can get your 10th spell to put it below 20% hp.

To add a little more theory to the discussion,

This is correct, but MORE mob specials isn't the only issue. Like our WSs, TP also affects the strength of the mob special. A good example is the Self-Destruct version of the Bomb Toss. The reason it is so destructive while the mob has a lot of life left, is because it has up to 300TP when it uses it.... when it has less than 20% life it can only have 100-115%TP... 300TP Self-Destruct Bomb toss = bad news...

While melleeing RDMs don't necessarily give the mob extra specials, the do EITHER give it extra specials OR more specials.... and both can be just as bad.

Ideally, the damage/mob TP ratio needs to be high to keep mob specials to a minimum, and restrict the resources your WHM needs to use to heal your party.... and RDM mellee has a bad damage/mob TP ratio...

(Oh, and nukes give the mob 10TP enfeebles (including Dia/Bio) give it 0TP...)

RDM > PLD > WHM > BLM > DRK > ???

I agree with #2. :P

Do not mele, most the time you just give useless TP, and in Bibiki Bay when ever damn gob wants to drop 2-3 bombs that is BAD!!!!

#4 I'd say rest more during fights than after. Debuff the mob, then dispel as needed, but take a breather, and when the rest of us rest, its time for our Refresh thats about to run out. :D

Yea, no SC for RDM. MB blizzard II if you got distortion going, otherwise make with the 'fresh.

Not to dissprove ya Raivyn, just wanted to add to your post. Thanks :P

HOORAY FOR FRIEND DEFENSE! WHO NEEDS LOGIC AND FACT WHEN YOU HAVE FRIENDS?

You fail to understand. If Lyndis was 'coloring outside the lines' and doing, at worst, an acceptable job of Red Mage, I would have absolutely nothing to complain about.

as for defending him merely bc he is my friend you can also note that i also put in there that i think he is a good player. just because he does not fit your description of the perfect rdm, and in reality may not be the perfect rdm, (but then again, even those who have met your description of such a player at times do not play well,) does not mean that you have to go out and purposely seek to find every little thing he does wrong.

im sure that lyndis knows both the strength and weaknesses of his job and plays it accordingly to his standards, and whether or not you accept that is up to you, though obviously you dont. so let it go. dont party with him if you dont like the way he plays, and leave it at that.

one pt and you think you have figured out his entire playing strategies because while, granted, yes you do know a lot about the advantages and disadvantages of the game, you do not know the person behind the controller, and you never know, they may surprise you.

Rdm has the highest number of acceptable subjobs(/blm /whm /smn). No other job has that much subjob variation, so quit bitching. :x

Well, there's warrior, too (/mnk, /thf, and /nin) but other than that you're right, clax.

WAR has /THF /NIN /MNK.

Drk has /Thf /War /Nin /Sam

The latter two can still work, just not as well
